Soft Sand vs. Low Tide

Just curious as to what everyone prefers when beach hunting, the soft sand or when it's low tide by the water's edge? Where do you generally find the gold? I know most will tell me that they grid but if you had to pick one which would you prefer?

i have been hunting the low tide line i tend to find the rings there ...i get to the beach 3 hours before the low tide and follow it down ....but id does depend on the beach u hunting (open ocean...or beach on a inlet)

My favorite and most successful detecting spots are:
1. The towel line.
2. Between the towel line and the wet sand (as the tide is going out).
3. Bottom of the 'cuts'.
4. In and around volleyball /courts/nets especially around the base of the posts. Your gonna hear the metal nails etc; but that's where your experience kicks in and your ears will tell you if it's a nail or a coin/ring/silver target.
5. Under piers and especially along the line on the sand (about 2-3 feet away from the 'edge' of the pier) that will be where falling coins/jewellery and watches would fall off the pier and will instantly be buried!!
6. There are a number of techniques I employ but in answer to the original question, these are the basic spots I will do first.

I always find small change and pocket losses on the dry sand above the high water mark. When I search below the high tide line I am looking to find rings and jewellery losses that occurred whilst people were swimming or playing in the sea. You find more targets above the high water line, but more of them are junk, ie ring pulls and light metals. If the water is warm and people can swim without a wetsuit you will do better than if they wear a wetsuit, as people's pockets turn out as they wade in to the water due to the air in their pocket rising. Any areas on the beach where the people are jumping about or playing on will be better than areas that aren't used much. If the sand has been taken off the beach by a storm or winds you might do very well.. I try a bit of both, if either the dry sand or the tidal area is good I'll stick with it. Good luck :)

More rings at low tide ankle to knee deep for me. I do grid the beach at low tide and from 3/4 low to low to knee deep at dead low tide.. Hope that is clear.
