soda pop can/jar of coins

I have been determining an aluminum can from coins by lifting the coil off the ground several inches and if the signal is still strong I walk on buy.
Today I was doing some air testing with various items and coins that I have found and when I decided to quit I passed the jar full of coins over the coil and it sounded like an alluminum can. I then passed an old beer can I dug the other day over the coil, and it read on the smart screen and sounded real close to the jar of coins.
So it is possible that by assuming that I have found a can I could be walking by a cash of coins.
Is my logic correct on this or as time goes can you tell the difference?
Thanks,
Cliff

your logic is correct, doubt you would be able to distinguish between a aluminum can and a jar of coins...depends where your hunting I guess, and how many signals your getting.. the odds of a jar of coins being at a beer drinking hangout is slim, however at an old foundation you might want to dig those can signals <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

find a cache at a area that your shur should have one than your going to dig a lot of junk. Unfortunatly untill they come up with a detector that can produce a actual image of the item in the ground thats just the way it is. Hope you do find a cache someday, It's a rush you won't forget.

Just like Jim and Miles say if I was at a park, a Ballfeild, school yard or church yard i would not dig those big signals, but at a old foundation or a farmstead out in the woods or anyplace a person would be likely to burry valuables there I would want to dig these big signal or any positive signals.

I am very new to metal detecting and have only had my Explorer out a couple of times, but I have discovered that a silver coin does sound like and register like an aluminum can. But by using the pinpoint mode you can usually determine the size of the target and that there is a much larger target buried under the ground than a small coin would be. But one way that you could easily determine if the target is an aluminum can or a glass jar filled with coins would be to use a probe, such as a long screw driver or long blade knife. You should be able to tell, in this manner, if it's an aluminum can or a glass jar full of coins which you are striking with the probe. This would prevent having to dig the target once you realized that the probe was striking aluminum. Again, I am very new at this, but maybe it will help you some, but keep in mind that this advice is from a complete novice. By the way, I am experienced enough to know that I love this Explorer!!
