So, you get a mixed signal with tones varying over many octaves

, however, somewhere in the mix there is a sweet repeatable tone. Maybe like one of the farthest right keys on a piano. The question is, is it likely that something good is down there or is it most likely just all junk?

Also, you hear a whisper of a great tone. Not so repeatable in any direction, so you hit the pinpoint to see if there is something down there. And you hear something. Is it possible there is something decent way down there or again is it probably junk? Sometimes I am not so confident in the pinpoint mode.

Often i believe a target is much deeper than it actually is (based on the depth reading ) and I am not sure why.....have you any idea?

thanks

Aaron...the sound you are describing could be absolutely anything which is probably why most have stayed away from responding...includine me:cool:

It could be a piece of iron 15" down... a coin next to iron... a coin mixed in with junk...just plain old junk...a monster chunk of iron down a couple of feet....absloutely anything.

If the sound you are talking about is more of a high pitched shriek...and does not have a "warbley"..."flutey" sound...then 99% of the time it ends up being iron for me. I always walk on the "shriekers".

There's no way to analyze what you are experiencing....you just need to dig a couple of these and see what they are.

sometimes though...you might get a monster hole down over a foot...and the signal will still be there...hence probably a monster piece of junk or iron.

Mixed signals is what I call them too Greaseguy, a sweet high tone mixed in with lower tones. Gives you that maybe it is somthing good feeling. I have found that more often than not its a piece of junk metal that has been crushed or folded like a stomped can thats flat and I think what happens is as the coil is passed over it varying densities of the metal are detected and you get the odd signal that has a bit of sweet in it. Try getting a flat pop can and running your coil over it from several directions and you will see what I mean. A folded tab will sound deceptive too. But of course, a nice silver next to a piece of junk may sound exactly the same. I usually try to run the coil from different directions, it seems that if a coin is down there the signal will be consistant and "round" not warbly like Bryce says.

would sound like. How is it that you distinguish between the all iron or junk and the iron/junk with an adjacent coin? Pobably you are all searching for this answer.

Thanks so much for the help as it all makes sense to me.

Its hard to explain, but your ear should be able to tell you your hearing a positive non ferrous target when in iron, after listening to a million targets :) .. you just know there is something down there besides the iron. as for mixed in non ferrous trash, if your getting a coin tone and your smart screen is jumping to coin area, you just have to dig it to find out.. move around and see if you can get it to separate into a fairly good response.. one direction will usually separate it the best
