So, With The Price Of Gas Being What It Is, Are You Going To Adventure Further For Your Metal Detecting Hunts?

John, I pretty much hunt the same amount and don't think to much about distance or the price of gas. However, my wife does!:ranting: HH jim tn

I have several sites I have permission to hunt that are 60 & 50 miles one way each. I just don't have the time due to circumstances right now, but it would be worth the gas to hit these two historic spots. They are both on private property and as of right now, I have exclusive rights to hunt these two spots. They were happening spots with the public 100 years ago.

Will be getting an AT Pro pretty soon along with an RV...definietly plan on getting out and hitting more places.

With the price of gas, I have a car that gets farely good gas mileage. Maybe I will have get to more people to ride with me so we can car pool on the gas prices

I'm getting 30+mpg on my little hunting rig, so that helps justify making some longer drives that might pay...its a bummer after a guy wipes out all the easy clad picking close to home...it does not appear that it is being replenished in any appreciable volume either...

You are right Mud. It is more of a cashless society today. Debit cards are being used from school lunch to going to Micky D's. Cool setup Mud. The canoe can help you get to some small fresh water islands. :) Your setup just reminded me of two little fresh water islands I want to hunt.

On the gas price thing - I don't know about your corner of the world but here in Connecticut, gas prices (in the last two months) have risen .40 - .60 + cents. One day I was thinking, "wow $2.20 for gas? I never thought I would see this again." Next thing I knew it started increasing little by little. Now it is up around $2.60 - $2.80.

I do have a little economical buggy like yours Mud. I can get 27-29 MPG around town and 36-38 on the highway.

I'm planning on going to the Texas coast again this June. Other than that 8 hour trip one way, I doubt I get further than 10 miles from my house. It's probably a good thing too, cause my pickup only gets about 15 mpg......ON THE HIGHWAY!!! :veryangry:

That's a sweet canoe Mud! Is it wooden? Who makes it? Is it lightweight?

It's not only the gas, but there's toll highways, parking meters, bad weather, lack of free time, etc...

Hey GruffyD! Yeah, thats a wooden type of half kayak thing I built a few years ago, out of 1/4" lumberyard luan and epoxy...it only weighs 32lbs, its fast and light, big open top so its easy to crawl in and out of...Me and a hunting buddy squeezed both our fat selves and gear in it one day and paddled across to an island and detected last Fall...Full disclosure: I'm fatter and older than he is, so I sat up front and held on to the gear while he paddled!:rofl: That was nice!

A guy never knows when he needs a boat, so a simple cartopper comes in handy...easy to build a boat out of wood and a few simple hand tools and some epoxy...sort of like building a bookshelf, only watertight and with a point on one end! Maybe $600 in materials to build a reasonable midsized boat...if that...I'll toss up a few pics just for inspiration and conversation since you seem interested in this subject........

Its a good alternative therapy too..only takes a few hours every night for about a week and viola!. Heres a boat!....I did a post with pics on the 'Hobbies' part of this Forum about this obsession, so you can go there and see some boats I built if you want...Historically speaking, a guy can go anywhere in the World if he has a boat, and if that same fellow has a detector along, all the more reason to do it, so theres that too...

Just get some wood and go for it, you dont need any 'plans' so to speak, they just slow you down with all the measuring and whatnot...All you need is a general idea of what you want to build, and the rest takes care of itself once a guy starts in...easy peasy... You can see I like the 'whale tail' motif and building twisted shaft paddles too..everything has to be light, balanced, proportionate and comfortable.

I got a few boats left in me, in fact, your interest may very well spur me on to starting one that has been floating around in my head for a while...so thanks!
Mud

ps: I like my big wooden River boat in the bottom center pic...I still have it, its 20' and really runs nice with a 15hp 4 stroke, its got a set of long oars I built out of ash, and an ash push pole too...all others boats I have sold, just the open kayak and my River boat I still have..I'd like to do a 24' version of it with a center console and twin 15's off the back! That would sure bring some stares at the boatramp, and theres no way Fongu would ever tip that one over!!

That is really impressive, Mud! I especially like the Viking looking boat!
I have a 16' flat bottom John boat, but need to get me another outboard for it.
