So who here has a GPX-4500?

Hi,

I had the first one in Alaska. I'm curious how many of you have one and what you think? Any regrets about getting one?

You won't pry mine from my hands until we see the GPX-5000.

Hi Steve,
I started out w/3500 a year ago. What a great machine. Bought a 4500 3 months ago, I have used it about 18 days and absolutely love it. I was detecting with my Bro and his 3500 was going nuts from EMI, couldn't quiet it down, but the 4500 ran much better. It seems that is the exact opposite experience of most in Australia that are always trashing the 4500 for EMI problems. The worst problem I have encountered with the 4500 is it hates carbon! I am not too surprised as my buddy's 4000 did also. The 3500 runs way quieter in burned areas.

Got one and like it but it is far from a perfect machine. Here in OZ, don't know about the states, we get a lot of atmospheric interference which plays havoc with the 4500s. Sure you can shut them up but when you do you lose the advantage and it becomes like running a 3500. To run in the advantage zone you have to put up with the jitters and wobbles which on some days is pathetic. These machines were definitely not ready for commercial sale when they were released here. I have been very successful using the one I have but am appalled that they sell them with the problems they have. Its like owning a 4wd that gets the rumbles when you drive over 100 ks an hour but is the only 4wd that will get to to where you want to go so you have no option but to put up with it. Some days are real diamond days when it all runs as smooth as but others:thumbdown: It is apparent that not enough proper field testing was carried out and that their decision to release machines within their typical 2 year time frame is money/sales based and not based upon the units themselves being ready and bug free. The massive product recall of the earlier model 4500,s was/is testament to this fact.

Hey Steve,
My wife and I use a GPX-4500. Very impressed with it in Australian soil conditions. It's a marked improvement over the GPX-4000 so I was pleased that Minelab didn't just bleed out the older model and only then offer the improved version. The new SETA feature has made a LOT of people very happy. And testing the 4500 alongside older models showed me just how sensitive it was in default settings compared to older models. Any issues I had initially turned out to be user error (wrong setting or too much metal within the range of the coil etc). I've never seen issues requiring repairs and any problems with other users turned out to be from their inexperience. Hope to be out with mine again in about 12 hours.

Cheers,

Marco

BT with great power comes great responsibility, if as you say the GPX-4500 performs smoothly but you crank the Gain through the roof then what do you expect? How can this be tied into Minelab not doing a good job of testing the units properly before release (I take offense to this because I did the majority of testing on them). A poor tradesman always blames his tools, on those days when things are ratty you should be adjusting the unit to suit which is the whole idea behind the digital platform giving YOU the operator more control of individual functions that before now have been written in stone because Minelab know what works best! Just because your car can do 150 miles an hour does not mean it will take that corner your approaching at the same speed. When your car crashes are you going to go to the car builder and complain? , seriously Brett think about what your saying or typing before hitting the "Post Message" button because it was not all that long ago you were all over this forum extolling the virtues of Minelab!!

Planning on the 4500 in Sept. for my birthday gift to me. will go to Stanton next year for the AZO outing. Got there as they were leaving this year. 1700 miles one way. Bad weather in Texas, and they were breaking camp as I pulled in !!!!!!!!!!!! LOL - Stuff happens. Plan to camp out there next year for a week. Will arrive a little earlier too!!!! H.H. Gary

I went from the 4000 to the 4500 and don't regret it.
It hasn't produced much more gold over ground I'd done with the 4000 though.
EMI isn't a problem where I work normally but over the last couple of weeks thunderstorms were forecast
daily although most were 100 - 200k's away. Apart from 2 afternoons the 45 performed perfectly.

Might not be a 5000for a while yet. Apparently the 45's are walking out the door by the 100's down here.
No point bringing out a new model yet.

 Who mentioned cranking the gain through the roof:blink: Is writing YOU underlined comp talk for yelling?
Who drives a car at those speeds on corners, what on earth are you on about:blink:
I pulled the pin because I got sick of people complaining to me about duds, which really were duds.
":crylol: With great power comes great responsibility" what the:blink: how about - ":crylol: A rolling stone gathers no moss" ":crylol: a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"
Your funny:clapping: but whats even more funny is ":crylol: its quiet out there....its quiet in here too":rofl::rofl:....as if...:rofl::rofl:

good tactic B.T,

When you don't have the answers, it's much better to answer employing stupidity.

Sure beats the hell out of any vain attempt at logic.:lmfao:

B.T thanks for your logical and well thought out reply, hopefully you apply the same amount of effort to the understanding of your GPX-4500.:stretcher:

Hi all,

I found that hand full with a 25" NF mono on a patch that's been hammed hard. All were a very faint response. One of the targets I had dismissed as ground noise when using the 3000 and the same coil.

For me the upgrade paid off on the first "old" patch. One of my favorite things is the ability to quickly select a preset custom profile to check a suspect target. What a tool!!

I'd really like to thank JP, Montana Bob,Old Sandy and all the other folks who have posted there tips and observations on setting for the GPX.

I'm going out tomorrow to try a patch that has tiny nuggets, plan to use a 9x5 DD and fool around with GB off, high gain and sharp.

As an old off road racer I always speed up for the curves, nothing like sideways and 90 mph to get your heart pumping : )

Jen every nugget is as thrilling as that first one : )
