First off let me say that I've only been MD'n for a couple weeks now but my god am I addicted! I have been reading a lot of comments lately that there's a few out there that coin shoot in relic mode. is there any advantage to this or is it all what works best for that individual's style? Would love to hear your experiences and opinions!

Im living in Europe, so I find Relic mode more useful around these soils

Hey xentryx. I've been detecting for about 4 mo's now and using my MXT for the last three. I have hunted almost exclusively in coin/jewelry mode up to this time and am just now starting to work the relic mode into my bag of options. From what I have read you can get some more depth in relic mode but I have been trying to learn all of the details of how my machine performs and reacts on shallower targets where the responses of the MXT are more consistent and clear. Down to say 4-5 maybe 6'. The C/J mode is more than capable of achieving this consistently. I have also been trying to learn the performance characteristics of my different coils without changing other variables such as the search mode. I started MD'ing with a beep and dig detector and feel that learning the nuances and harmonic differences of the single-tone signals has really helped me train my ear to often "hear" a good signal even when the VDI and/or other information I'm getting is either confusing or "iffy". I'm just now starting to listen for and chase fainter signals in C/J and am starting to use and get used to relic mode to reach deeper. JMHO. Hope that is helpful and good luck.

BTW- I know exactly what you mean about being addicted...and it only gets stronger.

I think you can get more depth in relic mode, also you can swing the coil a littler faster as well. Once you get use to the vdi # it is all the same a cdi of 20 in either mode is a nickle in my soil & a quarter is 86. I use the 4x6 & the 6x10 dd coils and pin pointing is the same with both of them. Learning your machine is all it takes.

I generally use the C&J mode. I know that some prefer the relic mode as they feel it's deeper. Tried it, didn't particularly like it and I've done well in C&J so it works for me.

update: Im looking at C&J mode again, I did some test this weekend on the field and I'm seriously considering to give it another try, I'm a Relic mode fan but who knows, that can change depending on my next results

In giving my 2 cents worth..i will use relic if doing a quick scan..but im maybe realizing that the signals in c&j though numerous are going to be best mode i want for decent search...the variable pitches are quite something to learn ,but feel its going to pay off in long run and along with speed of swing dependant on coil im using.Might sound far fetched..but when hunting in c&j thought would be nice if there was a push and release button to go from wanting to check signal from c&J and iron probability of prospecting...if 10 or 20% in that mode i would dig for sure.I really havent noticed if pitch in relic mode has more than the two variables I think there is..if there is not getting it...but then again I can hear crickets in one ear but not other..just my thoughts...CURT
