So what don't I understand...

Bought an Explorer SE with a Sunray probe last week. Did the typical thing, played for about two hours and found a clad quarter and two Lincolns. Decided to read the manual for the tenth time before going out this morning. Found a nickle and an old earing when I spotted some parking meters with grass around them. Thought it would be good practice for coins. Sure enough picked up a couple of dimes and pennies. Then the strangest thing happened. There was a dime and a penny sitting flat on the ground about 12 inches apart. The SE couldn't see them. I mean nothing! So not to panic, shut the puppy off and reset the factory settings just in case I had done something foolish. Still no signal! Area was getting a little trashy so I went home and built a test garden. (I know I should have done this first but the excitement was too much.) Cleared the ground using Iron mode with AM. Planted 5 pennies at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 inches, three nickels at 2, 4, and 6 inches, three dimes at 2, 4, and 6 inches, a quarter at 6 inches, a nail at 4, another nail at 4, a screw at 4, and finally a screw cap at 4. Factory setting, modified setting, or AM yields the same results: Hit pennies at 2, 4, 6, nickels at 2, 4, dimes at 2, 4, both nails, the screw, and the screw cap. Never hits the pennies at 8, or 10, the nickle at 6. Only sometimes does the quarter hit, but it misses more than half the time. So my question, if this is such a killer coin machine how come it can't find the "missing" coins?
