so much ground, and so little time...

I know the feeling. I live in an old town that dates back to the 1800's. An old railroad town that made it big with its granite quarrys. Not sure where to detect. All the older sites are just empty lots now but I just found out some of its contaminated from an old army/ hardware store that exploded back in the 60's and alot of its still privately owned. The old saloons been built over as well as the old racetrack. The only 2 places I can hunt is a lot where an old school used to sit and a stage coach station that still has one stone wall standing. But im afraid they have been hunted out. Anyways, wish me luck. HH.

No site is EVER hunted out...If you take that approach, your defeated before you even try...I have hunted the same field a LOT for about 2 years now, and I still find things in spots I went over a few months earlier...With each rain, and each winter, the ground is stirred and mixed again, and new things are brought to the surface...Also, there is a carnival that is held in the field each August, and the quarters just keep a dropping...:clapping:

Happy Hunting,

Well said BH, No place is EVER hunted out. I just got back from another goldfield trip. We ran into some guys on the spot I found my last 3 nuggets, my prospecting found another 2 this trip. These guys have been detecting this area for 20yrs, and have gridded the place to death. They could'nt believe it when they found out I got an 1955 sixpence (silver) only 2" deep, and an old jewelery piece. It was a brooch made out of 2 hearts, with 3 stones missing one side and Mizpah written on the other heart. What does Mizpah mean? anyone know? thanks in advance, HH regards Nugget.

Mizpah is a Jewish benediction. It originates from Genesis 31:49 "God will watch over us when we are apart." It is a very common Hebrew term meaning: `wherever you are, may good fortune be with you'. There is an entire line of "Mizpah" jewelry most often displayed with a heart.

Thanks heaps dirt jockey, any idea when the jewelery line first came out? The brooch is very old, and would have to been around in the 1800's due to it's location and depth. Again, thanks mate, HH regards Nugget.

I am going to do some research on Mizpah, it's history and jewelry and hopefully be able to give an update. I do know that Mizpah jewelry was given to family or lovers meaning, "wherever you go I am with you." These were given as love tokens, particularly in parting as a remembrance and expression of friendship and love particularly in the Victorian age. Of course today, Mizpah jewelry, is much more common it still holds a unique place in history. It would be very interesting to learn the history of the piece of jewelry you found. I know you have recovered a lot of good stuff over the years, I would rank this particular find up near the top of your list of great finds. Not so much for the monetary value but definitely for the historic and sentimental value it holds.
