So let me get this straight...if I'm looking for Indian Heads....

... in difficult ground, nails may sound like sweet targets while good targets can be "iffy" at best. Bury some known targets in that soil and let them stay for a year or so then read them to see what your machine is telling you in various programs with various changes.

If you are in a new area on a short term basis, look up some XLT forums and ask about XLT programs for that area that others may have found successful.

You will find that you have to deal with that setback. Ed explained it perfectly. One thing I find on the DFX is I accept from -40 up to +94 and this will make them sound a bit better but not perfect. Sometimes you just have to listen for a high pitched WARBLE in 1 out of 2-3 sweeps, and change the direction of the sweeps to make sure. You may not get the perfect signal each time on an IH below 5-6". Also with what Ed said on the nails, this does suck, I have noticed they are higher pitched than a coin and don't have a distinct warble, more of a constant high pitch and read 92-93. I hope this helps as the XLT is somewhat similar to the DFX.
