So is the Ace250 the poor mans x-terra 50?

I'm wondering if anyone has both detectors and how they fair against one another.

With the thousands being sold I hardly think so. It is Garrett's top selling detector and has been since it came out many months ago. All the oldtimers with closets full of big buck machines are using them and parking their high dollar machines.

The Ace 250 gives up very little compared to the Xterras. I had the X-30 for a short time, but sold it right after I bought the Ace because I just didn't see any real advantage in paying twice the price and then some) for what was effectively the same performance. The real cincher for me though was the availability of the small Sniper coils for the Ace, as I like to hunt in the trash. On a comparative basis, the X-30 with it's larger (and only) stock coil caused some masking problems where the Sniper coil would pick out coins in some pretty extreme junk. This is not to say that the Xterra-50 might not offer some benefits in some areas where manual ground balancing capabilities are a necessity, but again, look at the difference in price compared to the difference in performance before judging the Ace as an "inferior" detector. I see guys here on the forums, and a couple I have introduced the Ace 250 to, who just shake their heads in wonder at this little machine and what Garrett has managed to do at this price point. But in-the-field results are what really matters, and I have been keeping close tabs on my finds since buying the Ace 150 and 250, and can say that I am very impressed with it myself, even after being involved in this hobby since 1968 and trying MANY different machines over the years. They are not my "only" machines by any means, but it would certainly be near the top of my list if I had to choose only one machine.....at least for my primary style of hunting.

Like many others, I keep asking myself why I didn't buy one sooner.

Since I am a newbie to this sport, would some of you guys explain to me, the custom mode of the Ace 250, what is it?
Thanks Greg

Greg,

The Custom Mode allows you to set the various notch segments to your liking, and when you turn the machine off, it remembers those settings when you turn it back on.

You can also change the accept/reject notches in the other modes, but when you turn the machine off, and back on, it reverts back to the factory settings for those modes.

Hope this helps, and good hunting,

OldeTymer

Olde,
Thanks a bunch for the reply, now I know what that means. How does the 250 do in bad ground?
Thanks Greg

You just can't put a dollar value on something that finds so much, is so much fun to use and is colored yellow!

It does really, really well, I will be buying the sniper coil for it this spring. It has pulled coins out of the ground fo rme that were right up against iron....WOW! That is as good as it gets, I think.

and just ordered the Ace 250 for my grandson. People I know that have used the 250 tell me it's one heck of a machine, so I got it for my grandson but you can bet I will use it also. I plan on getting the sniper coil so I can use it since I don't know when the small coil for the XT50 will be out. With it's performance along with the XT50, I do believe I will have two great machines, IF my grandson doesn't hog it.....HH John
