SO IS ANYBODY HAPPY WITH THEIR AT PRO?

Woodchuck

New member
So is anybody pleased with the new AT Pro,and not having problems with it. I'm interested in hearing from you on how its performing.I'm thinking about getting one Thanks:shrug:

Mines working great in cold temperatures, in the snow and picks up Canadian coins, which is a blessing in itself. :)

I am not having any problems. It works great. I am going to work on a strait shaft to do alot of beach hunting. As I experiment with the pro mode. The standard mode works great also the tones are wider than the 250. Iron disc and Zeoro mode are awesome.

I think it is a great detector, but will take some serious time to learn all it's telling you. The only thing I had a problem with was the wiggle in the lower shaft, and a piece of electrical tape fixed that.

For me the water proof to 10 feet is the best feature. Now I can wade out and maybe find some color.

Got mine two days ago. I am new to detecting (about 5 months now) I am used to my ace 250 and bounty hunter, so I am no pro, but i will tell you this . I had no problem assembling the unit , head phones was a little tricky, but only about a minute to hook them up. Ive seen a lot of complaints about the headphone connections and I dont understand why people are complaining I hunted for three hours yesterday and out of the three hours The ATpro whipped my butt. The area I hunted was super trashy, I was in hunting in pro mode changing from zero to custom. My opinion is this machine is a firecracker, a relic furious black dog .If a person loves to dig buy it , if you want real good exercise get it , if you have back problems or knee probs well then stay on the porch . There is to much to grasp right now its a whole different game from my other machines. , but I can tell already , I love it. If you are going to take the ATpro out for a spin at one of your old sites youve hunted I suggest you take a lunch.

I think you (like some of the hard core Garrett users) are confusing constructive criticism with dislike for the machine. It is possible to like a machine overall but not like some aspect of it. I have read or watched every review I have seen on the AT PRO and I can't recall anyone saying they don't like it. However several people have pointed ways that it could be improved. I fall into that category myself though the ground up here is frozen so I haven't yet be able to use the AT PRO for what it was designed for which is relic hunting. However I have taken it to ocean beaches where I was pretty impressed by its performance for a single frequency VLF machine. It handles salt water beaches better than any other single frequency VLF machine I have used at a salt water beach, though I don't think it quite matches the performance of more expensive, multi-frequency machines at salt beaches with lots of mineralization.

It also seems like a killer on depth for a machine in its price range. I did test mine in a test garden and it was able to hit a silver dime at 12 inches using the Pro audio system - the meter and the standard audio couldn't lock on to the 12 inch dime but the PRO audio gave me a signal that was a definite digger. That is what this machine is all about - the PRO audio system it is really top notch.

Now that said, I hope you can tell that I like the machine but I do think it needs to be improved in at least one way - I don't think that Garrett thought ergonomics was important enough - the machine is very poorly balanced as almost all of its weight - the coil, control box and most of the rods are in front of the grip which makes the machine very front heavy, this is likely caused by their decision to waterproof the machine and yet keep the costs down. However there is a pretty easy fix for this which is to extend the back rod of the machine and get more weight at the back of the machine. There is a fellow on ebay who sells what he calls "Garrett Gizmos" which is an extension piece made out of solid aluminum that adds almost enough weight to put the machine in balance - its not quite heavy enough so the machine is still a little out of balance towards the front but the gizmo changes what was a large problem (in my book) to a minor nuisance.

The other thing I don't like about the design is the placement of the headphone jack but this too can be easily fixed by making an extension cable that puts a headphone jack under the elbow where it belongs.

There may be an issue with some of the coils having a grounding issue which causes falsing when the coil is grounded but that is a minor manufacturing problem that looks like only affects a small number of coils as most coils don't seem to have the problem. In any case is is not a fault with the machine's design but a start up manufacturing issue that can be easily corrected.

There are almost always some start up manufacturing issues with every new machine no matter who makes it and detectorists can almost always find a way to make there machines even better than they are - the AT PRO is no different in this regard from many other highly regarded machines.

So if you are looking for a relic or general purpose machine in the $600 price range I don't think you will be able to do better than an AT PRO. Personally I can't wait for the spring thaw so I can test out this machine at relic hunting where I think it will hold its own against machines costing twice as much. That Pro audio system seems like it is really something special.

I like mine. It will run with any of the top VLF detectors for every day hunting.

Jason

Woodchucks do chuck wood. Saw them chucking it on that commercial on tv.

That is beautiful!

Thank you so much for posting that wonderful ancient item.

Happy holidays to you Algerio and to all of our AT PRO INTERNATIONAL friends.

Buona fortuna,

Steve that was a thoughtful and concise report on the At Pro. I could not state it any better and will not try. Thanks.

As to the question at hand, all I have done with mine is assemble and minor testing. I cant wait til spring.

Jerry

I love my ATPro and find no fault at all with it. i don't wiggle mine in the air because i have never found any coins in the air. it's the best detector i have ever owned and i have many. I have found more in the last month with it thatn i did all year with the others.

Weather has only allowed one outing , but I was well satisfied with what I experienced. It will take a lot more hunts before I understand all of it`s capabilities. But even with one hunt I was very impressed with the tone roll for bottle caps, the DD coil target separation, and the flexible iron discrimination. I think I`ll get schooled every time I swing this machine.
