my neighbor came over to the fence. He say's he alway's wanted one. He has a Whites catalog and say's he is going to go detecting when he retires. Well, we got to talking and he told me about a lady who lost a three carat diamond ring in the vegetable garden at a house where she lived back in the 1970s. He said they looked for it with detectors but never could find it but they did find quite a few minnie balls while they were looking for the ring. The property is right on S. old Tennessee St., hwy 293, in Cartersville, GA. It's about 5 acres and the house sits on top of a hill, it was built in 1905. However there were two other buildings there before. A home on top of the hill that was built in about 1840 and was used as a Confederate hospital and a building down by the road that was built and used by an attorney in the 1880s. It is a very interesting site.
So... I got up this AM and went to see the lady who lost the ring at the place where she now lives and talked with her a minute about it. She was not too much help... said she lost it in the beans.
Then I went to the site. It is now an attorneys office again. They said I could hunt for the ring but if I found anything else I had to bring it in, (later the owner attorney showed up and said I can hunt the whole property as much as I want and can keep what I find). There was no sign of a garden and they didn't know where it was so I called the lady again and her daughter was there to help communicate and was able to tell me exactly where the garden was and where the "beans' were...
I hunted for almost 8 hours and finished the first pass on about half the garden plot... about 800-900 sq. ft.... I am first going slowly and digging all the good sounding hits. It's slow going. When I get through with this I am going to start over and do it again... then again... then maybe with the Tejon after I get it good and clean. If I had only had the Tejon for hunting this site it would not have been pretty. I would have had to dig up the whole yard. I do think that the Tejon will be very handy once I get the place cleaner using the GT, I may find the ring with the GT though. I wonder if a Tejon will even hit a ladies diamond ring, I know that the GT will though...
If that ring is there I am going to find it for her.
I did find a couple of nice things. A piece of a gun barrel, look's like it was bent and smashed a little, maybe it's something else because it is only about 6" long but that is what it look's like. Also found a brass handle of some kind that has a slot on it for some reason... I'll try and get some pics up over the weekend. Found one Minnie. I have not found one like this before. It is a three ringer and is exactly 1.5 mm in diameter and comes to a sharp point at the top.
My neighbor has a really big cast iron pot that they found there when they were searching for the ring in the 70s. It is about two ft. deep and a good 4 to 5' across. They do not know what it was used for but I reckon it was used to boil rags for the hospital... just guessing though...
I guess neighbors are good for something. Hopefully this will turn into a good site with lot's of finds. The current owner is very into local history and has written about the attorney who lived there in the 1880s. We talked for a while about civil war sites in the area and he told me about some more places I need to check out.
I had a blast today...
