So How does the Minelab Warranty Work Dealers

So when I got my ET in the spring the dealer sent in the warranty card. I know the warranty transfers with the unit at that point if I sell it within the warranty time. But what if I buy it and keep the card(if the dealer doesn't send it in for me) and don't send it in. I put it up for sell and state: I haven't sent the card in so you can when you get it. So I can keep it for a year, sell it and then send the card in to start the warranty? I see this all the time. How does ML know when it is actually sold from the dealer as that is when the warranty should really start. Do you the dealer report the sale with serial number to ML when sold?

Im not a dealer so im guessing.

Id guess the dealers report the serial numbers back to Minelab when they sell them, whether or not the customer does.

Thats what I would think. I see they changed location of this post and not sure why. Maybe should have left dealer out of title. So now its time to call ML and check to see when it really starts. I see guys on flea bay state they haven't mailed in their cards and a friend is thinking about getting one with this being stated. Just don't want to be misled.

I think Minelab's policy on new detectors is that the first owner must fill out the registration (online or by mail) in order for successive owners to have the remaining warranty.

Most if not all detectors that i've registered, the warranty card clearly states you have "X" amount of days to register the warranty. So with that i'm thinking the manufacturer has someway through feedback by the dealer as to when the unit was sold. Just guessing though.

they definitely go by serial # I bought a used Safari and the PCB had to be replaced, luckily still had almost 2 years warranty left. Minelab simply asked for serial # asked for my name address etc. emailed me a shipping label, I sent in the machine, had it back in 2 weeks running like new. All at NO CHARGE TO ME WHATSOEVER! they also checked to see when the warranty runs out. That way when I decided to sell I could verify to new buyer when the warranty runs out. As long as the dealer verified the sale, Minelab has the info. Very easy process all-around!

The thing about serial number is that if a unit sits on a dealers self for 6 months and the dealer doesn't have to send anything to them about the sale then 6 months of warranty is gone. If you buy from individual and the dealer is unknown how would Mfg. know when sold. I guess they could look up the dealer who sold it by serial number and then contact dealer if still around to find out when sold. A lot of leg work. So if you hold the card for longer and mail it in 6 months later then a year of the warranty is already gone. Seems almost fuzzy math. I guess the best approach is to talk to Mfg. before purchase of a used unit to see how much is left before you buy. A seller should supply you with number if asked or I would bale on the purchase. Just trying to get my friend to steer away from action sites where people state card has not been mailed in and buy from repeatable dealer like Richard @ Backwoods and the others on this site. I just want to be factual in my statements to him. I mailed my warranty card in on my new headphones and even talked to mfg about a problem I had with the first set. A year later I had a cord problem and he remembered me but stated: I don't have your card on file so no warranty repair. I know for a fact I mailed it yet he claimed he didn't get it. Even had receipt and dealer I bought it from but dealer had gone out of business. He wouldn't accept the receipt only the card. No way to register on line so I can only assume that it was lost in mail or Mfg of headphones just is a dishonest group. So point is he should have honored to replace the cord and it cost him a repeat customer and everybody else in my very large MD club. So if a card is involved and if have to send it in it will be by registered mail. A real inconvenience.

In our dealer contract with Minelab we dealers agree to assist customers in the completion of Minelab customer warranty cards and to use best efforts to ensure that all warranty cards are returned to Minelab in a timely manner.
The dealer should fill out your name on the card, serial number and date sold. If there is a question on any Minelab detector call Minelab with the serial number.

Warranty starts when you buy the item and gets to your house, fill out card and , call them , and if you can go online and register there also. I called and the date started when i called, same date on card, and online. Thats what all 3 Mfg's told me. I bought a detector on the first of the month, 9 days later came to my house called mfg. 2 days after i got it , warranty started on the 11th. I have a white's, garrett's and minlab detectors and never had a problem with warranties at all. I call a week later and check in case they may have pushed the button . LOL , GS.
