So far so good with the Compadre

I got a Compadre 8 inch coil machine thanks to super fast service from Kellyco the day before Christmas Eve. It's only been used in my yard and one next door but with excellent results. I'm learning the noises it makes and what constitutes a decent target. I do get fooled by a number of very old deep pipes we have that wander around the lots in the oddest places. However over time the crisp clear sounds are more than likely coin shaped objects. The unit is run just above pull tab right now. Otherwise I don't get a foot at a time without a hit. I've noticed that small old copper rivets product the same sound. At times I find nothing right away but the Compadre insists there is something in that pile of lose soil on my digging sheet. Even with the Garrett Pin Pointer I have to run it thought the pile a few times even hand holding small amounts of sandy soil to find the target, sometimes BB small. The Compadre is proving to be very simple to use, light in the hand even using it from the pole up close, and reliable. The only problem I've encountered is that is will not work properly at all if the Garrett Pin Pointer is on. A very minor issue I just have to remember to shut off the pin pointer if I set it down switching between the two while checking a section of soil. For the price I paid the unit represents an excellent value. It's been a lot of fun and I'm very pleased with the purchase.

The more you use the Compadre the more that you will like it, Tesoro couldn't have said it any better than what they said - the Tesoro Compadre was designed with the idea that less is more.

Amazing machine , hard to call it an entry level detector

You can avoid the pipes you mentioned by sizing up your target before digging. When you get a good target sound pinpoint by "Xing" over the target until you have it centered under the coil. You can then move the coil slightly left and right to see if the target response is a small target. If you can move more than a coin sized object and still get target response, it is a larger non-coin target.

Also by raising the coil up with your wiggle, You can get an idea how deep your item is. After a while you will hear it talking to you. You will know a good target from a bad one. I listen to mine better than I listen to my wife.. You are going to love that little thing. Just don't go up there on them other sights and tell them big boys how good it is. We want all the goodies for our self.. Take your time with it... KEN

I always laugh when I read something like this.
Evidently many just like a very easy and quiet experience when hunting.
Me, I AIM for the most trashiest areas I can find, set the disc low and go because that is exactly the kind of area where some pretty good jewelry likes to hide out.

A foot at a time?
I get signals within inches, maybe less, a lot less, but there are ways to tell trash from good targets at a pretty high percentage even in these environments using the Compadre.

Not knocking you, all are different so just use it the way you want that makes you happy.

The only time I set mine above foil was to see where tabs disced out for my personal knowledge. Good advice.
