I was going up the Malahat, [a section of road on Vancouver Island] and I saw a car pulled over to the side of the road, distraught lady and 2 guys, in suits, looking at it.
I had to stop and ask what was wrong. One of the suits said that there was water in the gas. The lady said that the car just died and would not start. I asked her to turn it over; no go. I checked the spark and there was none. "Ah ha" says me, "your ignition module is gone. Just get a new one and put it in". Lady asks how we do that?
Okay, I drive back to Victoria, buy a new module and come back and put it in. The car will still not start. So now I have to dig deeper. I removed the distributor cap and in so doing, I touched the rotor, and it spun around. Not a good thing.
I tell her that the timing belt [this is a belt, not a chain] has broken and she has to get a new one. "Is this serious?" Oh , yeah!! it is .
She starts to get upset, tears and all, and says that she is going to be late to get her husband and child; they have very little money.
Off the parts store I go again, get a new belt and drive back. Did i mention that it was absolutely pouring out?? It was. So, under the car, flashlight in mouth, remove a lot of pieces from the motor, wipe tha water from my mouth and eyes, get up and set the top dead centre with a screwdiver, install the belt, and put it all back together. She turns it over and it fires right up.
"What do I owe you?" She asks. I told her that I could not take any money, since that is not why I did it. If I took money, it would take away from the deed that I did.
And my wife and I still, to this day, get christmas cards from this lovely couple.
All the best
M
