So... after a few days here at Panama City Beach I realize that I am going to need a waterproof detector but...

which one?? I have a Soverign GT and a T2 with me and the GT works well wading and on the sand. The T2 works well as long as the coil is not submerged in saltwater... but of course, I cannot go out in the water with either so... I will be buying a water detector.
Question... do all the water detectors work in both fresh and salt water?
Nuther question... someone here told me that the detector pro machines work ok here but don't do well down in Miami. What do you think is the best all round water detector?

I'd appreciate any hints or comments or directions to a FAQ or post where this has been discussed, I have not been able to find one.

Thanks!

J

For saltwater beaches, you can use any pulse unit, or Excalibur, or Head Hunter Wader/Diver. I have expierience with the Head Hunter Pulse. It works great at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront for me. I also have the Excal, but not as long as the pulse. It does very well tooo. I dont know about the Head Hunters not working in Florida. If you are hunting salt water. You got to have a detector made for salt water. HH

There is all kinds of information here on detectors for salt water. Just read back into the posts. A good one costs an arm and a leg but you get what you pay for. Some people are very set on one type of detector. For me, Its Tesoro SandShark Pulse and Minelab X-Cal to knock out the iron.,

Will either machine work on any saltwater beach or do some require the Minelab because of the iron? I was told that here at PCB the iron content is really high because of all the steel trash cans they used to put on the beach tha would get washed away then wash back up on the beach in tiny pieces. Will the Tiger or Sand Shark handle that or do you need the Xcal in a place like that.

I'll keep reading but shortcuts are good too...

Thanks!

Julien

The SandShark is a PI machine, it picks up anything, same with a DetectorPro Pulse, The minelab will discriminate out the small iron stuff, crab pot wire, bobby pins etc. We do have some mineralized sand here but I'm not familiar with your area.

A 1280 by Fisher work good in FL. waters and cost about $700,Excal 800 or 1000 works good too, about $1200. Garrett's PI,Infinium bad idea works bad in FL.waters . It is up to you what you want to spend. I have used all these detectors in FL. I have a CZ20 and an Excal 1000.I had the Garrett infinium, traded it for the excal. happy hunting,Ron Lord, Naples FL.
