Snowing/Bored = unscientific Silver air test

Yes, air tests are unreliable and for the most part, meaningless. But, it's snowing here and I'm bored to death - so I did an unofficial air test with my Silver. Didn't get it out much at the end of last year - have to do much better this year.

I know, I know, but it's either this or work on taxes...

Steve's totally unscientific air test with Silver uMax:

Round one
Discrim = 'L' in Foil
Sens = 8
measured to nearest 1/8"

fine 14k ring 3 - 1/8
'43 steel cent 4 - 1/2
5c clad 5 - 5/8
10c clad 5 - 7/8
1c clad 6 - 1/4
mens 14k ring 6 - 1/2
25c clad 6 - 3/4
25c silver 6 - 7/8
50c clad 7 - 1/8
50c silver 7 - 1/2
$1 clad 8 - 3/4

Round 2
Discrim = 'L' in Foil
Sens = 'super tuned' 1/2 into red
measured to nearest 1/8"

fine 14k ring 4 - 1/8
'43 steel cent 4 - 3/4
5c clad 6 - 1/8
10c clad 7 - 1/8
1c clad 7 - 1/2
mens 14k ring 7 - 7/8
25c clad 8 - 1/4
25c silver 8 - 1/2
50c clad 9 - 1/4
50c silver 9 - 3/8
$1 clad 10 - 1/2

Super tune gives the Silver a big steroid boost. Again, mostly meaningless results, as I've pulled 3 or 4 70s vintage quarters from a local park at 9", but air tests show less than this.

FWIW, Stephen

Ok, back to the taxes...

I think "air testing" and hunting are two different sensitivity levels on the part of the operator..In air, a test,, in the field, all your senses are tuned to the locator, sorry for the archaic term. detector..I've dug up coins and good items that I "felt"..The last large cent, was just as a truck was backing up to dump cement, I put the detector down, it went off, I went .What the Hay, and popped the coin out.That was it..Your numbers are a little better than mine...I read every post on the Silver from Day One. I felt it was a good machine, and now that I have one, can say it is about the most under rated machine on the market. Of course, the "V" enjoys showing off, and who am I to complain? Cordially Nad

Nad is correct. I tested mine the other day against my Ace 250 and found some coins at 4" the Ace missed. Now, it could have been me-sometimes I forget and use the full length of the coil to scan with and most people don't know it but the Ace is a concentric coil-NOT a wide scan. I was able to go back over and detect the coins with the Ace, but it just seems the Silver has a knack for NOT missing too many coins-it's uncanny and hard to explain. And about a month or two ago, I was in a tot lot in the bark chips and got a soft signal and it was a penny at a MEASURED 7", and I had the sensitivity at 0. I swear-I don't know if it's the pleasing tone or what-but just when I'm about to pick up an ID machine for good-I'm back to the Silver.

Always interesting to see someones test results.
I have actually used the Silver with minimum setting on sens, just enough to turn on the machine. And it didn't find coins only on the surface. Was using the 5.75 coil.
