Snow/ice bound silver! :garrett:

Had some rain, ice and snow come upon us Sun and Mon, so was hunkered down for a couple of days. Woke up this morning and the temp at 5a was 15, set a record for this date that went back to 1893, so did the gym thing and then cooked my better half and self a hearty breakfast. By that time it was 20 degrees, so threw on the winter togs and headed out. Knew I would be able to dig in the woods, but wanted to hunt the edges of the woods along a field. Anyway, once I broke up the 1 to 2 inches of frozen crust, the ground was as soft as butter. When I hit a target I wanted to dig, I stomped the spot with the heel of my hikers and dug. All in all, I lasted two hours and quit when my batteries got down to one bar. My hands were a little cold and I didn't feel like changing batteries out in the field. Anyway, I had dug a Mercury dime and several cents, 2 clad quarters, a nice 3 ringer, junk and the post part of a ear ring. The ear ring is marked 925, the Merc is a 41d and 3 of the cents turned out to be wheaties. A 1920, 37 and 53. Had the 11" coil on and it was great to get out again. HH jim tn

Good Lord Jim! You couldn't hold off another day for a little nicer weather? You did very well for the conditions you were up against. Nice going!

Good job Jim.... If you had found a diamond ring you could'a posted ICE FIND !! LOL

Good Lord no tab, he who snoozes looses. Weather, you know, is in the eye of the beholder. Actually, it was quite pleasant with the non wind conditions. And, had the whole square to myself save for the die hard dog walkers and a couple of joggers. Yeah, Elton, the real diamond ice would have been nice. Under the circumstances, I'll take the silver and run.:detecting: HH jim tn

Some nice finds there Jim. Cant wait to be able to get out and start hunting around here. Have a pile of places I can go now with some new permissions for 100 year old fair grounds and all but with frost down 36" this year I am at a standstill for a while. Been really racking my brain for some places to hunt while snow is on the ground, but our only local popular sledding his is in the neighboring town which is turbo anti MDing unless on a beach without vegetation.....

Thanks Ben. I really feel for you guys in the snow and sub freezing climate areas. But, it is March so the worse is behind you. Won't be long.:detecting: HH jim tn

Good work in those conditions! :clapping: That heel stomp method is a useful trick, good on ya for posting that detail!

Another good haul on a chilly day, Jim! Way to keep that old silver scared!

Can I ask what the heel stop trick does? Is to soften the spot of ground to dig it? I have heard of stomping on the area if getting a sketchy signal, but doesnt seem to apply here....

I don't typically stomp the ground, but after a couple inches of rain, sleet and snow the days before a couple inch thick ice crust was on and in the grass so when ever I had to dig a target I would stomp the icy crust above the target to break it so I could dig. HH jim tn

I have noticed that hunting in frosty ground that the audio signals come out more crisp and more accurate. Maybe the moisture helps with the signals being sent and received. Nice to see some silver and old grey matter looking back at me in your post.
