Snooping around Gloucester Harbor.....

Here we have the famous, Fishermans statue. Its to honor all the Gloucester Fishermen who went to Sea - and did not return. There is an awful lot of names on the plaques!I think this was erected in the 20's.If you ever saw the movie "CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS" you would understand better, how they fished by hand,in Dorys, under harse weather conditions. The Statue is shown as a salute, and the end of the movie. Its a damn good movie![attachment 50741 GloucesterMass088.jpg] What your seeing next, may look strange, but this is the GREASY POLE!! Ask anyone in Gloucester what that means! Remember, Gloucester is extremely proud of its fishing heritage, and every year, they host the fishermans fiesta. Its a time when they "Bless the Fleet".Very religious town. They also host Dory races, etc. Now this pole thing...Well they put a flag at the tip of the pole, and then grease, and i mean grease,by the handfuls, inches thick, all over that pole.To win a prize, one must be really CRAZY,have a few glasses of wine,(as Sunny & Roosters :D)or a case of beer or two,and try to walk, crawl or whatever to the tip,and grab the pole.Best place to few this,is in your boat. It is extremely dangerous, but very funny too watch. There is a rescue boat nearby! Some try to "run",others take there time, but when they go,its quick. This is the event of the year! [attachment 50742 GloucesterMass084.jpg] Next i caught the cleanest fishing trawler,i ever saw, returning to port.[attachment 50745 GloucesterMass032.jpg] Next is the C.G.Cutter, Grand Isle, berthing at the Government pier, waiting for action.(oops) Here is an old timer, all restored.[attachment 50747 GloucesterMass007.jpg] In this photo, you are looking out of the harbor.Thats TEN LB.Island on the left out there, with a Coastie on the right. Its about a 30/40 minute ride following the coast,to Beverly Harbor, again depending on the size of vessel, and the whitecaps your facing!:D

I said it before, you live in a fantastic area. History jumps out at you at every turn. Great pics. Keep 'em coming.

I was in Florida I loved to go to the fishing villages like Crystal River and watch the fishing boats. Lots of greeks there. Tight familys. They seem to really love their brothers.

Lots of sponge fishing in the area

You post some interesting pictures:thumbup:

Ten Pound is on my list for checking tides!
