thinking about buying a small coil for my at pro and cant make up my mind,i wanna here from you guys

I recommend the 5x8 coil. If you are planning to hunt tight area get the SNIPER, but if you want one for trashy area and still get good depth than the 5x8 is perfect. I know from my experience with the 5x8 coil its perfect for every purpose. I haven't put the stock coil back on since using the 5x8. Hope this help FORMON.

Mind you I don't own either but upon purchasing my AT Pro from a reputable dealer that's a sponsor here and on other forums, told me to steer clear of the sniper coil as its not as great as its suppose to be. He said to get the 5x8. Will have better separation in trash, and just as easy to get into tight spots. Not to mention he said it makes the ATP feel like it has the perfect balance for longer hunts.

Keep in mind I have not tried either nor own either but I do trust what he is saying.

I have the AT Gold with both the 5x8 and the 8x11 coils. I agree with everyone above. My 5x8 works great in trashy areas, feels well balanced, goes deeper, and covers more ground than the snipe will.

The 5x8 rarely comes off my ATs. It does a fantastic job of sorting through trashy sites, getting through brushy and rocky terrain, and it's easy on the arms. I don't own the sniper. That said, if you're doing a lot of tot lot and school hunting, the sniper can be handy for fencelines and around equipment, and some prospectors seem to like it for nugget hunting.

I like the weight of the 5X8. The AT is nicer to swing and is easier to sneak into tight spaces. Of course, the sniper is even better at that, but you lose a lot of relative depth and ground coverage with a sniper, yet the 5X8 will go almost anywhere despite it's larger size. The sniper will be even easier to swing, but imagine the amount of swinging you would need to do to equal the same area covered by the 5X8. The sniper is more of a "niche" coil. Lol.

Trash is almost everywhere; the biggest advantage seems to be separation of trash. I really like the 5X8.

It depends on where you hunt....
I have 2 AT Pro's and 1 AT Gold.
I have the stock8.5 x 11" dd coil, 5x8 dd, 4.5"con. and the 6x9" con. coil.
my main coil is the 5x8 and 2nd is the 4.5" coil, and 3rd is the stock coil...
The places that I hunt are trashy and if its super trashy, then the 4.5" coil..
I look for super trashy area's,,, most people leave them alone...
I have picked up a Zinc at 7" in my soil, with my 4.5" coil,, it read 74....
If I could only have one coil,, it would be the 5x8" coil...
I found this ring with my AT Pro and the 4.5" coil, on the 2nd pass,
in a area that I had been over lots of times with the 5x8 coil..

I like the 5x8 coil. I bought the 4.5" coil and only used it twice. I have a NEL sharpshooter 5x9.5" coil on order , I hope it works like the 5x8 but go deeper. Time will tell. GS

I hunt trashy parks, old home sites, old one room school yards and open fields. I have the 5x8, the stock and a nel tornado. I tried the hockey puck but sold it, I use the 5x8 for my small coil, it does everything I want in a small coil. I've also read some post on here some guys didn't like the nel tornado coil because it was to chatty. I can run full sens and no problem. Went to one of my standby parks last week and pulled an Injun at 10 1/2 inches. Oh and with the 5x8 the deepest so far was a barber dime at 9". I always off set my ground balance by 10 points.

I had read a thread similar to this when I was researching which machine to buy last year. Everyone recommended the 5X8 coil (same as is happening here) so I bought one with the machine. I put the 5X8 on last April, and it hasn't come off yet. I have a 5 acre field to hunt this spring, and I will put the stock coil on, for the faster coverage of the field, but if I find any hot areas, I will go back over them with the 5X8. I did find my first two gold rings ever with the 5X8 coil last April. Artie

Hi how did youike the Nel Sharpshooter vs the Garrett 5x8? Was the nel as good but deeper?

I have had the sharpshooter on from the time I bought it. It , for me works as good as the 5x8 and as deep as the 8x11. It's staying on the gold for now. GS
