Sniffing, penny popping and the Golden Voice...

...I took a spin to one of my research sites to see if I could sniff up a little Ag. I couldnt. I am looking for a few sites that fell off the map in the 40's and havent stumbled on them as yet.
So, after some searching and digging of all deep signals, I ended up with 'nut. Well, 'nut that be old. Man, the clock was ticking! So it was off to the fairgrounds with the Golden uMax for some pinpoint practice and deep knee bends - at least I get paid for them.

While I was there, I had a revelation. First came the usual thunder clap and then a booming voice from the cloudless sky shook the earth at my feet with the following....

"David, it is time you took the leap..."

"Huh," I said, looking around. "What leap? Who are you?? How did you know where to find me?"

"Nevermind all that, dummy!" said the Voice. The thunder clapped again, louder this time. "Stop interrupting me when I'm revealing cosmic knowledge and pay attention, if you don't mind! Now, where was I...oh, yes...
From this moment on, YOU are a Nickel Hunter. Few have what it takes to master this course, but YOU are ready. It is to be your challenge to compare all signals against the nickel measure. So it shall be...I have spoken! Now get to it."

I looked around to see if anyone else might have heard this, but I was alone. I felt sort of like Scrooge and shrugged, saying to myself, "Hmmm, maybe I need to lay off the garlic pizza and beer before bedtime. Well, whatever..."

This new method means I dig alot more signals and work the midrange DISC harder. Hopefully 'Ol Boomer, as I've started calling him, knows what he's doing and the payoff will come.

Todays gleanings:

After my little, er, "encounter," I went back to gridding, vs. cherry picking, and decided to dig all the Stinkin Zincer tones along with the nickel and other signals. Hey, Boomer didn't say I couldn't, right? First signal was the handcuff key you see in the pic - dead on SZ. All the usual suspects surfaced and I hit a nice Hot Zone, too. Marked that one for next time.

Hope you got to it and kept 'em swingin'. Oh, and about 'Ol Boomer there... mum's the word, okay?

I surely hate aching knees caused by disintegrating zinc pennies

Nickel hunting tip for you Dave. Use your notch to help id

Set your notch width so that Nickels give an abrupt, short, cut off sound. Then whenever you think you might have a target in the nickel range just flip the notch switch over to narrow and see how it sounds. Helps to put one in your shoe too to compare against.

I have trouble with the two middle tones, especially on targets that hit on the boundaries between tones so I'm always using the notch switches to help me figure out what I'm hearing. Works pretty good.

Think a simple little analog meter tied to the speaker would help?

Oh, yeah!! THe one problem target at the farigrounds are small lightbulb bases from all the rides. When they burn out, the carnies just toss them on the ground. In some places they literally carpet the place. Luckily, they come in well below the nickle on the DISC scale. AS you know the Golden, like all Tesoros, has a razor edged DISC, ie, you can dead ID any target with by just getting to the breakup point.

Am doing these. The bulbs, as I said come in as you enter the foil range, so I set my notch to break up on nickle, then when I hit a target with that tone I switch to the narrow notch and Voila!...if it still beeps loud and clear, it aint a nickle. I can twiddle the notch width a bit to be sure.

And Ive been gluing a nickle to my shoes, well, for a Loooong time now.

Same here. I have gotten a pretty good ear with the Golden, so far, and am growing accustomed to the two midrange tones. So far, I have pulltabs down to a science. With all the bulb bases, a pulltab signal is a refreshing change and I dig em all. And we know what can be lurking in that range, dont we?
Because of this experience with the Golden, Im thinking Whites M6 for next year - Ive gotten to liking the "tone thing" so much.

Naw, I wouldnt want o muck up a good thing...
