Sniffer detector --- any blood hounds

Hamp

New member
Does anyone make a detector that can be "trained" to accept only a single narrow range of target ID numbers. For example searching along the highway for a 9mm jhp?

Preferably just hold down a button and swing the coil over a known sample.

I believe that is/was possible with the Garrett GTAX 1250 and probably similar in their line. Similarly, the Whites Prizm series can be set to accept only one notch over the discrimination range. There may be others as well.

You are correct, lots of detectors can be set to accept only one target category. I was hoping to find something that works just the opposite of a notch. Easy for an untrained person to use with a "sniff" button.

Check out the Etrac. It has a quickmask feature that can be used in the reverse to search for one particular target or a few or as many as you want. I have one and its a pretty incredible machine. You a cop Hamp?

Lots around with notch accept/reject but the easy option is the upper range Whites such as the Spectrum/XLT/DFX where you can just learn accept or reject by selecting the option and sweeping the item in front of the coil. It then learns the "signature" of the item.

When looking for a particuliar target notches from several companies work well but imagine notched in so tight expect a depth loss...not to mention missing a lot of goodies..

Push a button and sniff the target and then thats all it will look for. Time Ranger and Land Ranger series have this feature.

The Explorers have a nice feature to discriminate the entire screen then accept a particuar target, an I've used that will success when I've lost a small metal object in the grass. But the audio is typically degraded to a degree and a small amount of trash, rust or mineralization will shift the response to an area that is discriminated out. Again, the Explorer acceptance range can be widened to minimize this effect.

I'll have to look at the Time ranger. In this case a narrow band would be great even with a significant loss of depth.

I do not think you will get the loss of depth on the X terra series. Likewise with some other digital notch detectors. I run the X705

I would encourage you to look into a non BH model. Minelab, Whites, Garrett, and others. The BH machines work but I find the other machines to be more intuitive to use. That is me, I almost guarantee you will find the build quality and fit and finish of the above machines superior to anything in the BountyHunter line. So far I have only ran the BH and the Minelab. My sis has a Whites and friends run Garretts and Fisher CZs and Minelabs. All are better than BH.

P.S. I did end up buying another BH, a Quickdraw, to give to a kid as his first machine. 75$ which he will work off. They do have a place in the market.

Trouble that your limited to two coils (with the Whites you have ten, he could use the 18 x 3 inch Bigfoot for large areas, the six inch Eliminator which is top shielded so you can work right under a wire fences). Much better for law enforcement. Plus since Newforce retired from the U.S. market no repair facilities in America.

Not that much depth loss on the Time Ranger. Dirt dependant of course. On the Time ranger, you would be sniffing and searching for a specific range of VDI numbers, much like learn accept on the DFX or Explorer, only much simpler to set up and use. Now that there is a DD coil available for this series of units, you will see additional performance increases, too. Less masking, faster recovery and better performance in bad ground conditions.

Look for one that also has surface blanking. Not many units have this feature and while it is not something you'd want to use all the time, it does come in handy every now and then.

Kind of talking myself into one just posting this :wiggle:

Good luck.
Mike
