Snake pistol

New member
Met another guy detecting. He said when he goes out in woods in warm months he carries a "snake pistol" with him in case he sees a snake. Do any of you guys do the same?

No, why kill the snake, for what being a snake. Snakes don't seek you out. If I see a snake, it is usually non venomous and if it is venomous best just to walk away. Your detector's shaft is much longer than a snake strike. Snakes do much more for the environment than is realized. Some people claim that Cottonmouths chase you, it is untrue. I handle venomous snakes as part of my job. Snakes don't attack people, you are not their prey, they only defend themselves. You should be more concerned about the most dangerous and deadly creature on Earth, Mosquito's. They kill more people than any other creature. If you want to carry a gun I would suggest a pistol with "snake shot" or a Thompson 410 pistol, single shot.

More just for the two-legged variety of snakes....

I tend to carry pepper spray but in certain situations and when it is legal, such as when not on school grounds and the like, I carry concealed.

Mike

ps: A great snake pistol would be a small .22 pistol loaded with shot shell cartriges. I have a Ruger single action that I keep loaded with these shells at home, It is excellant for dealing with umwanted vermin and even other folks dogs that try to come and attack our pets. These bullets have a load of #6 birdshot and can do some serious damage at close range, and still carry enough power several yards away to inspire a pesky mut that is tresspassing, like one that came on my property and snarled at me a few months ago.

Why would anyone want to kill a poor snake.

Don't people have better thangs ta do?

IMHO, I agree that it is better to not kill a snake if you can avoid it. Most folks only have trouble with them when they get within striking range as they are trying to kill or in some instances, play with them. I have however, and will, continue to kill any venemous snake that is near enough a populated area to present a threat to people or pets. By the way, in reference to my prior response, and mention of pepper spray, I in no way intended to say or imply that such spray would work of actual snakes, jusy the 2-legged kind or perhaps and aggressive dog.

PS: Several years ago a young man down state from us was trying to impress some girls by acting as though he was going to kiss a Diamond Back. As he brought the snake to his lips, it was able to stretch just enough to strike him and due to the amount of venom and it's closeness to his brain, the boy died. By the way, he, the boy had been drinking prior to this as well.

I like snakes. That is one way to get me p***ed off is to kill or harm a snake. I don't like spiders thou, unless they are on somebody else. I'm like Steve on Ghosthunters. The way I tell if a snake is poison or not, is to look at their eyes. If it's poison, I go around him. I also like bats, their fun to watch. Am I strange?

I agree. Only one reason to kill a snake. If someone with you is bitten by a venomous snake I would kill it and take it to the hospital so that the species could be identified and the proper antivenom adminstered.

I only carry comcealed (with a permit) for 2 legged vermin or if I have been advised by the property owner to watch for wild dogs. I was confronted a couple of years ago by the 2 legged vermin that had definite trouble on his mind until he saw the 40 S&W on my hip and left but not without turning and looking over his shoulder several times to see what I was doing. I immediately left the place. Never had any problem with snakes or spiders. Once you have this happen you are always looking around your surroundings while detecting. I have sent many snakes scurring for cover with my coil and have no reason to harm them as long as they leave me alone.

I don't usually hunt where venomous snakes lurk as we have none close, but I do carry a handgun when detecting in the woods in case of ornery critters or humans. In the city, I figure my Lesche digger is weapon enough and it doesn't require a permit, nor create the concern a firearm might.

... I leave snakes alone. We have a mutual understanding that way.

As for two-legged snakes; I'll say nothing. I dont need anyone to know if I'm carrying or not... they can find out if it comes to that.

Discretion is always the better part of valor.
