Snake Buckle?

denny

New member
Dug up near Camp Babbit in California. Area goes back to 1840`s.

Buckle is 1-1/2in. length and 3/4in. width. Made of brass.

Any ideas what it actually is? HH denny

It sure does resemble a Seahorse, but actually, I suspect it is a Double Duck head buckle. Many "snake" buckles are in reality duck, goose or swan heads. Yours I believe is patterned after the Wood Duck. Wood Ducks are indigenous to North America, and CA has a large population. Notice the comb or crest on the duck's heads. Now do a search on the Wood Duck (Aix Sponsa; latin name). I have examined many snake buckles including John Turner's vast collection, and found many to have waterfowl heads. Very nice piece! Most folks are unaware of the military activity in CA during the pre, civil war and post wartime days. I know of a fair number of US belt plates that have been found in CA. Good hunting, David @ Dixie
