...here's one that I found a few years ago, and for certain mine is NOT a Confederate issue.

This particular one was found in Canada along with a number of items from WWI, in which they were worn part of the British/Canadian uniform well into the war. (see oliver pattern) As well, these snake buckles were used by Canadian police forces.

During the Civil War, these same type snake buckles were supplied by the British to the Confederacy with the rifled Enfield musket and was included with a cap pouch, enfield belt (with snake buckle), cartridge box, bayonet, frog & scabbard.
For a number of years, unscrupulous Civil War dealers were buying Canadian WWI vintage snake buckles and selling them again as Confederate issue. That trick is now well known. I've heard you can tell because the newer issued snake buckles have a "squashed guppy" look, however I have also read that some of the same molds have been used to make these since the time of the civil war.
There are many varieties of snake buckles: snake heads, duck heads etc, etc, and there are books available for identifying them.
As I mentioned, I dug mine in Canada with other WWI items--buttons & badges and the like. If you dug yours down south alongside CW relics, then it's pretty sure you've got a confederate issue.
Say, what a great find, eh? When I found mine, I dropped it in my pouch thinking it was just a rusted "S"-hook. It wasn't till later I got looking at it and saw some of the details though the dirt. What a surprise when it was cleaned up!
