Smelling a Scam

I advertised the whites GMT on craigslist locally a couple days ago. So far I've had two contacts both via my cell phone number. The first was a guy who lived way on the other side of the Phoenix area

Craig's list seems to be a haven for scammers ...................

I've gotten that exact same senario to the tee a few months back when I was trying to sell a new trek bike on craigs list... I knew right away is was a scam when they offered me 50 bucks more than my asking price.....I didn't bother to waste my time even responding..

If it walks like a skunk....looks like a skunk...smells like a skunk.....

Had the same scam attempted on myself, only had a treadmill for sale on CL. Got a response from Boston...only a 1000 miles away. He offered to send a company check from Boston College for $300 more than I was asking for the item. Told me to cash the check and give the $300 to the moving company he had hired to pick it up.
I had tears in my eyes from laughing after he texted me that info. If the check had been cashed, and the bank probably would not have questioned it, I would have been out the price of the treadmill and would have had to cover the full amount of the bounced check . Just remember if a deal is to good to be true, it probably isn't. If some of these scumbags would put their imaginative talents towards a positive endeavor, they could be very successful in life.

every time i put something on CL all i get is responses from scammers. its just too much of a headache, so i just don't use craigslist. its pretty sad really.

You know, I've been on thisforum and a few others for several years , and have sold and bought stuff from forum members, Always got what I expected out of the deal, Sometimes it pays that you trust, sometimes it doesn't but I trust the guys on the forums, Unless they only have just registered. Grubstake

I have had great luck with Craigslist. The scammers on craiglist are so obvious. The only times I have been ripped off have been on internet forums.
This one included.

I have had the same scenerio. I said it had to be a postal money order. They said OK, but sent a cashiers check. This was for a metal detector, about 6 years ago.
Don't recall how much? Seems like over $500.00
The shipping was to Ca. I took this very real looking cashiers check to my bank and asked the teller. She said it looked fine.
I asked for a service person and they said it might be fine, but that if it was a fake from out of the country, it may take 2 weeks to show up as fake. I told the buyer what she had said and he acted like I was a crook! {ALL BY EMAIL-NO CALLS} I told him I had specified a Postal M.O. and he said his cashiers check was just as good. I said, if it's good, I will ship your detector in 14 days. He emailed me twice a day complaining and asking why I had no faith in my fellow man [type stuff]
I deposited it and waited. Almost 2 weeks later, it bounced! I have overdraft protection, so it just made me get an automatic loan.
Good thing I didn't ship!!! I have done over a hundred deals [buy, sell, trade] on the forums and if I don't recognize the name, I do some searching. Never got cheated once! 2 times, the sellers idea of excellent condition, was my idea of fair-good at best, but that's about it!

My friend sold a 10,000$ JD tractor. He agreed to meet the guy on Sunday to do the deal. He was handed a Cashier's check on a local bank that looked fine. Well it was bad and he lost his tractor. I really think cash in hand is the only way. If they can write a check they can get cash. There is a happy ending. Over 2 years later in a theft ring bust the tractor was found and returned.

I have had fairly good luck with Craigslist. For a while I kept getting emails asking "Is it still for sale?" I refused to answer them as I specified that if the ad was still up then the item was still for sale.

Any one who send me a question is asked for a phone number that I can call them and discuss their questions. Quite frequently I never hear from them again.

Like it was said "If it smells then it is a skunk."

Well these scammers suck. I contacted several good deals on cl in the past but outside of my state asking if they are willing to ship. If they even bother to respond at all their response makes me feel like they think im some sort of scammer. I missed out on some amazing deals because of it. Sad truth is I am just a guy with paypal or usps money order or walmart money order looking for a good deal on a used detector to use for myself. I personally wish scammers and thieves should be punished with the instant loss of their lives. Take these vermin out of our communities one way or another. I bet they will think twice about scamming if it meant the loss of their life.

Trust me lytle78 this is definatly a scam.We have sold many things on cl and we get these all the time.Good luck and beware!!!HH

I have had good luck on CL. My ad clearly states cash only. If you don't have the cash in hand, you are a scammer in my book. Those that are serioulsy interested will have no problem paying cash.

All they want is your bank routing numbers. Then they use your numbers and go to a third party check making service put their name and address(which is fake)along with your real banking numbers and wreek havoc on your real bank account. Always ask for a postal money order. trust me you dont want to learn the hard way.
