Smartfind screen.....

It is my understanding that the 2 dimensional screen whether it be in iron mask or a pattern is still the smartfind screen.CladrosieO is just trying to spin everone and confuse. If you are in Iron mask mode, look at the top of the screen,it says Avanced-Smart,or Quickstart-smart.You have Smartfind or Digital.I could be wrong, but don't think I am.Iron mask is nothing more than the disc knob on most detectors.Yes it is different and more adjustable, but the same none the less.Being able to edit the screen to reject or except certain targets is just one more option the Explorer is capable of doing that others can't.IMO,The idea is to knock out common trash at paticular sites you hunt.Let's say your are hunting cellar holes in the woods and are sick of digging shotgun brass, you edit it to reject just those. It is infinitely adjustable. But IMO,people get carried away with it and try just to except only good targets and no trash.Sure you get the ones that ring in nice and clear, but if you are hunting a site that has been hunted before they are already gone, unless they are too deep to have been found by most detectors. You will miss probably 75%+ coins with a tight pattern. It may bounce in the open area, but bounce right over to the disced section and you will get a tone-null-tone that is like a bad target.Sometimes you get into certain soil types that it will not ever hit where you think they should and there doesn't even have to be trash near it.With iron mask -8~-16 you will get these targets that bounce over towards iron with out them nulling. They can and do sound great, you would dig most of them by the sound, before you even look at the screen. Some break up but still have a nice sound even broken up some and stay in the clear section of the screen. You will learn to dig those.Deep seated coins can bounce all over the place. The first one I ever found I would have never thought was a coin, but I knew it was not iron.
As far as setting up a program that mimics an iron mask setting,I think they are the same, but I have heard people swear that targets will hit and sound differently between the two.Even if they are a little different, you are going to finds coins with trash and in not so great soil with either one,as long as you don't try and disc too much.
Alot of new users have the tendency to try and run a tight pattern because there is less noise to deal with and it is easier for them to analyze those signals.I honestly think that is a bad habit to get into. You will never learn how to pick off a good coin in trash like that.Go slow and listen.you really can have 10 pulltab low tones per swing and pick off a higher toned coin in with them if you go slow enough, you just need to develope that ear.You will get to the point where there will be a coin lower than a pull tab and it will sound just different enough to grab your attention.Pulltab just being an example of a common trash item of course, the same applies to coins with nails, etc.

the starting point of zero disc on most other detectors when set at the preset of -6, in other words running an explorer at the preset iron mask level is like running a normal machine at zero disc. most machines at zero disc still knock out most iron, with the explorer you can accept as much more iron as you wish until you accept all at -16, then you are running in all metal, but with ID capabilities(big advantage in high iron and mineralization) Sure some other machines have some of these features but the explorer is really the only one I know of that allows you complete control of all settings, including the cabability of rejecting as many single targets as you want. And no there is no difference in running a pattern mocking iron mask then running in iron mask that I can tell

The way I look at it, the more disc. you use the less depth you get. I think this applies to anyones machine. You just have to "dig some trash to get the cash".Just sounds like the Explorer might give you some info to decide what to dig.

Ric:
I see what you are saying. I have trouble with (sometimes) if I am coming up on say iron or some other kind of trash, at the first sound of it will be high and then gradually turn to low. Thats if I am not over more center of target it will have a weak sense of what it is and sound high and once I am over closer to center it will recognize it better and sound correct,(low). Thats where I mistake it for good target close to trash. Crown caps have got me a bit Sunday with the top being rust and the inside still clean metal. They would sound sweet but start out far left and stay there or they would eventually work over to the area of crown caps. It was the sweet sound (high) that made me dig them, dispite the crosshair location. I still need to experiment with the deep signals, not sure what to look for. I thought I knew but am still not properly IDing them. I have not been to many different places were there maybe deep signals other than soda cans.(1 ft. deep fill) They were loud and clear though as if they were on top of the ground. I've also dug tiny cig. lighter flint wheels at 8" or better, tiny pieces of soldier or welding slag at great depth so I know it will see a coin deep. Thanks Ric for your time and help, this is one person who listens and then decides what works and what doesn't, I know every area is different and what works in your area might not in mine.

I believe this is in response to my Q? below and I appreciate the responses, Thanks Jim

Good post Jim,always wondered where on the iron mask scale the standard zero disc was compared to
other machines, Would guess that took some experimenting which I never got around to doing myself. Thanks for the info.
