Small test with the Gold Bug (version 3 software)

I decided to put this together as I had not seen any tests done with the Fisher Gold Bug SE / Pro.

First off, my Gold Bug is from Cabela's and has version 3 software in it for those that don't know.

I did a test just using the pinpoint with 15 items. Below you will see a list of these items with numbers at the beginning that also match the numbers in the pictures I have enclosed with this post.

Also note that these are all air tests done in house and not out in the open in the ground.

The gain was set to 100 and the ground balance was left at 82.9 for this test with the stock 5" DD coil.

Each item was passed over the base of the coil until the sound of each item became very faint.

I recorded the distance from the coil of each item using a steel ruler on the floor with the coil 7" away from the ruler.

All measurements are in inches.

OK, the items are as follows with the measurements at the end of each. The last measurement is from the metal detector it's self, I'll explain on this later.

1 Iron nail 5" (8") [This was laying flat to the coil]
1 Iron nail 8" (8") [This was with the point of the nail facing the base of the coil]
2 14k Gold ring (wide band) 10.5" (9")
3 14k Gold ring (thin band) 9.5" (9")
4 14k White Gold 8" (8")
5 14k Gold ring (medium) 12" (9")
6 14k Gold Stud earring with Ruby 3" (8")
7 1994 Half Dollar 11" (8")
8 1947 Dime 9" (9")
9 14k Gold ring 10" (8") [Mans ring, a little thinner than the medium gold band]
10 1942 Half Dollar 11" (9")
11 Silver ring 9" (8")
12 Titanium ring with a thin gold band 11" (9")
13 Thin Gold Chain (14k) 3" (8")
14 1877 Quarter Dollar 10" (9")
15 1943 nickel 10.5" (9)

The measurements inside the ( ) are from the metal detector, it was making a guess at how far away the object was based on the signal and size of the object. Notice the small gold chain and earring was way out with the detector giving a depth reading of 8". This was not the case here, both came in at 3" give or take half an inch.

Wow thats awesome air test on the small earing.Gives a guy somewhat of idea on how well it would hit small nuggets. Thanks for all the time you spent.Just proved to me how good this machine really is!I Seems to hit small gold at a very good distance. The coins dont air test as well as I thought they would(my compass hits dimes at 9")-but thats ok I want it for gold nuggets and park hunting for gold rings.

Great work! Thanks for the test. I am sure the Gold Bug Pro would have exactly the same results.. as it has the 3 software in it as well.
Anyone see a test on the Pro? or a test with the 11" coil on either unit? Thanks again for your hard work...

rockup1 you thought the silver would hit better.
A 1947 dime at 9 inches with 5in coil on a gold machine seems good for me.

Now it might not be the deepest but for me the ID lock in my mild soil does the trick.

Yeah like I said forgot it was a 5" coil
9" is pretty dang good for any machine with a 5".

Thats what my MXT would air test a penny with a 5" excelarator coil, but I could hit grain size gold with it.

I was Very surprised at just how small of gold the MXT will hit with the excelarator coil. Most guys would not beleave it.

Just curious to see how small of gold, "goldbugpro", will detect. You would think with the newer circuit design and higher operating freq,it Should detect gold alot smaller than the mxt?

But then again maybe not-maybe the excelarator coil is the KEY.Cant wait to see if they build one for the new goldbugpro/se/dp.

That is a good test.
I'd be curious to see has it performs with the gain set to around 35 or 40. What do you do when you can't run it at max all the time ?
I know that when I tested it against my F5, it passed it at max gain settings (as expected) but at 1/2 gain settings the F5 was pretty much drawing equal.

That f5 sounds like a dang good unit.Good results! Wow did not think it was that deep of a machine for the price!
If I was not wanting to do gold prospecting-the F5 would be great!

My 2.9 runs at 100 almost all the time. Its that stable! I cut the gain back when I use the 5" coil and Im bumping poles at the tot lots to get those coins tight to the metal. One sweet machine. Just check my 2 last post. I have gotten the whole range from gold to silver, brass and my favorite, clad. Buys my coils.

I cannot get within a foot from the poles at tot lots without hearing the poles but even saturated I can still pick up a good target.
The SEs seem to be able to run at 100 gain almost anywhere and that makes me wonder if they dummied them down on sensitivity from my model. The only place I can run full out is far away from EMI sources and definitely not in a house. Yet I can achieve the same depth results as posted at full gain with my machine set at half.
I have also tested a 1.2 gram nugget at 3 inches against a T2 and E-trac and at half gain I hit better than both. I can nail it in disc mode and they have to use all metal. I could get it deeper but this seems to be there limit so That is where I ask them to check it at.
What are your thoughts on this? I'm not bad talking the newer machines but it seems that If everyone complained about Emis on the first units that FTs response would be to reduce gain power to help silence the machines? Or would there be another fix that would not effect overall sensitivity?
BH Landstar Your post was very informative and after a year with my version two I have come to the conclusion that if my machine tells me its 2 inches deep I can count on it being 3or 4 on coin sized objects. it always seems targets are deeper than it says except on small targets. I have found eight small earrings and targets as small as earring backs as deep as two inches.
These are great little machines I hope you can get out in the fields soon.

The Fisher Gold Bug SE is not the same as a Fisher Gold Bug Pro. Close, but no cigar. The Gold Bug Pro is the finished product of this Gold Bug series. Units shipped to Cabellas may, could be different.

Mr. Bill

All around super unit. Runs on the beach just as well as on the land. I can almost always run at 100% gain and the depth on nickels and gold is incredible...even with the small coil.

Because of this unit, I am selling a bunch of others...it's that good.
