small, medium, or large?

Hello,

On an old site with deep coins (wheaties, mostly, but some nice silver, too) and lots of trash, especially rusty nails:

1--Use a small coil; it will separate the coins from the trash. Maybe not as deep, but the separation will be worth the loss of depth
2--Use the detector's stock coil. It separates some and also gives you depth. It's a compromise.
3--Use a large coil to get down there where the big silver is hiding. Sure you will get some interference from the trash, but that silver will ring through!
4--Stock, then in the second pass, small
5--Stock, then in the second pass, large
6--Some other answer (and why, please....)

Got a little money, trying to decide whether to buy a smaller coil or a bigger one!

Thanks,

Mike

6. Buy a small shovel like a Sampson and a big magnet.

If there's big silver like you say , the nails will mask it out regardless of the coil and you'll end up removing the trash eventually anyway so the stock will probably be sufficient. You might as well just get to work!!
Might add a tape measure to the shopping list so you can mark it out in nice neat 20x20 sections :)

The larger the coil the more area it will cover and the more trash it will see.

You did not say what detector and what type coil. I have a V3i with DD coils. The DD coils will separate trash much better while still going deep. Much better than concentric but there are trade offs.

I like to take a two coil approach: First a small coil to pick out the shallow stuff that's co-located with trash. Once that's done and there's a few less targets in the way, hit it with the stock coil to get the deeper stuff.
