Small Gold

I May be going out west in March for what may be my one and only attempt at nugget hunting. I plan to take my Cortes on the trip, and would like to ask if using the 7 inch widescan is better and more sensitive for finding small gold than the stock coil? I know that the depth will be the same to a little less.

All opinions are welcome.

[size=medium]it was known to be found in nugget form. Especially decent -sized nuggets. A good rule of thumb is that if the nugget doesn't have enough mass to be seen and picked up with a simple pinch of the fingers, it might not have enough mass to be detectable. Naturally, that all depends on the model and coil in use. Presuming you've done that, then the next best thing you'll need is an ample amount of patience.

After that, with the Cort

Thanks Monte, I will take a look around to see if anyone has a used 7 or 5 3/4 inch concentric for sale.

I think I just missed the one that Steve had for sale. :-(

Bouncing around between the rocks on my Socal claims was a nightmare with a large coil.

Whatever Monte advises, I'd go with the smallest of em.

I presume you will be hunting in all metal mode. I bet the ground will be moderate to high to extreme in iron mineralization unless you get lucky and hit a alkaline patch. The concentric coils will see too much ground in the higher mineralization areas, even the small 4", to get much depth. The ground signal will just overwhelm it. Take any concentric coil you want but you'd better have that 7" widescan in your back pocket because you will wish you had it.

That's a 100% in agreement all the way - I have had times or actually nearly full days, and nothing. Another day and did ok.
Been with a few who totally gave up after a hunt or two - it's not like coin hunting in a park.
Patience + quality headphones / persistence

Amen to that. Five months of hunting nearly every day last summer and nothing for me. :nopity:

But just wait til this summer

I'm going to conference in Phoenix in March. There is a GPAA outing at the Stanton (Rich Hill) claim immediately after the conference that I am planning to attend. I was hoping to hook up with some experienced local MDers that already know the area.

What we have here is a failure to... "adjust GB properly."

;)

take the biggest coil you can find! I have been to Rich Hill three times and bigger is better. The land is owned by Weaver Mining District, and you do need a permit which cost $25 a year . Rent a truck or jeep because the trip will destroy a car!! You can E-mail me if you have any questions.

the concentric coils are more sensitive to small objects, but they also see more ground mineralization than the DD coil. which if the ground is really hot the concentric will drive you mad. but they are better suited to seeing small items. but the DD have a wider swipe and allows you to cover more ground and run your sensitive higher. since the cortes can hunt in all metal it will work ok. but the small gold will get by you. so go have fun, ;and if it were me i would use a DD coil, for the cortes that would be the 7 or 8.5 inch one. again where gold is usaully the ground can change very fast and can be very mineralized. good hunting.
