Small Coil for T-2!!!

rob

Member
Hey guys,

I spoke to the folks at Teknetics and they say there is not a small coil in the works for the T-2, or at least for a while. SunRay is also not looking to mfg a small coil for this unit.

What is the latest on any of you guys that are working on a coil for the T-2?

I have a detecting buddy that is bugging me to build him one but I don't know the specs. The parts are readily available so keep us posted what any of you guys have started...

Thanks,

Rob

That is to bad no small coil is even being worked on. I have waited a long time hoping that they would offer us one this spring and let us all go out and see what we can do with it.

Maybe they want us to all buy a new fisher F75 and maybe this way DAVE can design the next level for the T2 for the F75. I can see how long it is taking some of the big compaines to design the next new machine. White's really didn't do much and the fisher edge didn't do much and the new minelab didn't do too much. But the T2 was the machine that really gave us a new twist and advanatage to detecting.

So lets see what Dave and the new F75 can produce. I read they will have at least two coils.

Hi Rob. Regarding your request for information on the T2 coil.

You may or may not be aware of the picture posted on this forum of a T2 head 'opened up'.

I did try to acquire it but I think it was already promised to another interested party.

Just how well are you 'kitted-out' to produce a 'professional quality' coil, and would you aim for a cut-down version of the standard head?

Have you any ideas about the head's 'on-board' components, and how they interact with the main circuitry?

Testing the head via the cable socket, for its 'black-box' parameters suggests that there may be a capacitor network also included within the coil's housing. Possibilities are that it may be part of a Colpitts type oscillatory arrangement. That just guesswork at this moment in time.
If I had that coil to examine, it would be a simple matter to evaluate it's parameters, but a far-far harder project to build a smaller replica of sufficient quality.

The configuration of a 2D coil system is simple enough, and with the right approach, easy to balance. BUT then you have to provide a Faraday Screen around the inner surface of the plastic housing. That's when the troubles start. Then there's the dreaded problem of the physical stability of the coils. They may look solidly anchored down when you pour the filler, but only when its all assembled and sealed, ready for action, that you discover that it electronically 'rattles' when knocked in field usage.

It could be a lot of fun trying, but also frustrating to finally produce one of even moderate functionality.

Anyway, applause and best wishes in your endeavours. Keep us informed of your peogress...........MattR.UK.

Great photo Matt...

I would love to take a closer look at this coil. I think if you were to remove the epoxy resin and back up how this coil is really put together, I think it could be done.

Matt also says there may be another component other than just wires. If so, that should not be hard to find. I have done many modifications to several types of electronics and this is not rocket science.

I am really going to try to do something with this just so we can tell Teknetics we did it.

Keep all posted,

Rob in Tennessee...

I would like for all T2 dealers that read this forum to give us some feedback on what Texas First is telling them about a smaller coil for the T2. I think we need a straight answer from TF!
