Small 18Kt ring

I now use a Minelab Excalibur. I started with a DetectorPro Wader. It was a very good machine but there is too much junk in the water here and I needed a machine that could discriminate better. I will never be able to use a PI detector here.

Nice loot. Got mine on order (can you believe it?). Looks like the unit is working good for ya! We shall see!

Great! You will be happy once you tune your ear to it. My only complaint is the weight, but it is better when it is in the water. I have an idea that I am going to try out to help lighten it in the water. If it works, I'll let you know.

I have had it for almost 9 months now and I can say that it has paid for itself. I don't usually mention what I use because I know that there are other good machines out there. But everyone has different problems in their particular area and mine is trash. I will pull at least 3X in trash as what I pull in coin. Sometimes it is more like 5X. Learn your gold sounds and remember that 14K sounds a little different from 18K.

I downloaded gold sounds for the Excal from a website but my sounds are different from theirs. I think it may be the dynamics of the settings. Some folk run their Excal with '0' discrimination. That is probably good if you don't have a lot of trash. I run mine at '5' to take out the ferrous and most bottle caps.

I feel like I can trust it. I am reasonably certain that certain tones are pull tabs. I use my stainless steel scoop as a tone reference. Anything that sounds closer to it is a coin and gold can be anything that sounds different from the pull-tab tone. This 18Kt ring sounded like a bee. Some 14Kt sounds like a coin but slightly different. 10 is sometimes closer to aluminum. It may depend on the angle that it is at. If in doubt, dig it out!

Can't wait. Thanks for the info Steve. Maybe asking questions later. Unit is still not here yet and am getting a little ticked as I was told that I would have the unit on thursday.

hi steve, reading your bit about getting used to your scally tones, heres a thing i now carry on the beach to help "predict" or i.d my finds before i dig . i made a daisy chain of drilled coins , silver, gold rings , copper , coke ring pulls etc, and tied them onto a string at 10"to 12 " sh spaces. I then planted matching items in the sand , when i detected a "find" i compered the finds tone to the same item/tone on the string ?? i found that it really helped me get used to my 1000 tones thus making it more interesting trying to predict before you dig !! try it , p.s. i tooooo had the same problem with my surfmaster p.i. although light and simple to use i got sick of the BUD caps and hair clips !!!!!!!!!! thats why i bought the scally 1000 regards tony weston

That's a great idea, especially if you are new to the machine. I have one other reference I use, I keep a 14K ring on my pinky when I hunt and once in a while I pass it over the coil to remind myself of the tone, but I do like your idea of the samples on a chain. Good luck to you and thanks for the tip!
