It's the heat. I've noticed all the forums across the web for detecting have slowed down, and they always do when it gets super hot for long stretches of time across the entire country like it's been. There was just a recent thread on this very topic in the Sovereign forum called "Why No Activity? Is It The Heat?". Pretty much the same conclusion by others. Too hot and dry, and this slow down is seen every time this happens. In this economy not too many people are machine hopping anyway, so I don't expect too many people have moved on to "sample the wine" with something else. It's just too hot and with too dry of ground for many to be out land hunting is all.

Here's that thread...

http://www.findmall.com/read.php?21,1746568,1746568#msg-1746568

Also, as more and more threads on topics pile up in these forums for specific machines, less and less people need to ask certain questions if they take the time to use the search function to find what they are looking for. Some of us have recently thrown a bunch of the common questions on various topics into the various stickys in the BBS forum to try to squash the common questions that always pop up and our answered in threads over and over again. Leaves more time for people to talk about hunts or get into more finer detail on topics broached by the stickys. Same deal in this forum. A wealth of coil review sticky info and a wealth of older thread content on various Explorer issues and quesstions. Bound to slow down some for that reason, but it'll pick up when the heat eases off and the ground ain't so rock hard dry.

I have a friend who is making the switch from his explorer2 and was curious if you had even tried one.
If so what settings did you use? He has watched posts on the ctx specific forum but values your knowledge on the minelabs and was hoping you might have some type of input for him? Sorry to put you on the spot especially if you haven't used one.

No, not exactly. Agree with Critter, just too hot around here. I am located about 25 miles north of Port Hudson battlefield, and the weather has been beastly. It may be hot and dry in other places. but we have had heat from 90 degrees on up, a fair amount of rain, and humidity to match. Recent heat indices were in the 100-108 range, and I am too old and wise (Alright, too old) to go out and play in that. Waiting for October and November when something like reality returns to this little patch of heaven.

Heatwave is dreadful some times feels like i might compromise my MD with water damage considering the amount of sweat dripping off me

Kodak Easyshare doesn't work anymore and I can't figure out how to shrink my pictures to fit on this forum since I started using Zoom Browser EX ( it's got to be some simple step I am missing ) . Otherwise I would have posted a couple of cool finds I have recently made .Just because the new CTX came out doesn't mean my other detectors have stopped finding things . lol !

You can use Paint found on just about all computers using windows. Load the pic, then use the crop/shrink or whatever function it's called in one of the drop down windows from the toolbar. Try 75% for vertical and 75% for horizontal and then save. If that don't work then try a lower #. Lacking that, you can also do an online search for something like "online picture convertor" and then set the output to JPEG or whatever for the output format and a lower quality or whatever it allows to say shrink the picture or reduce it's size. Very easy, and no need to run the program on your computer. Just converts online and allows you to click on and save the converted pic. Also great way to convert formats not accepted by Findmall to accepted ones such as JPEG or whatever.

We will all eventually have to move on to a newer detector as the older ones die off. I still have an XS and am thinking of getting a CTX, but it has been so dry around here no detecting anyways.

I do look at the Etrac and CTX forums. Wish they would combine all of them. Getting to be way too many different forums on this site.

Chris

Way too many explorer users that can take a $500 XS...EX2...or SE...and still compete and many times BEAT the new $2500 machines:thumbup:

my Explorers AREN'T going anywhere:beers:

In fact AFTER using it for those 50+ hours...I just purchased a very nice Explorer 2 to go along with my 2 SE's and E-Trac.:)...so that speaks for itself.

That's all I'm sayin' at this point...but might put up a post before long of my very unbiased opinion of the CTX/Explorer comparison.

I get at least 10 emails each week wanting to know the answer to question you just asked.

Fellers' I'm sincerely asking that you don't bombard me with any more emails about my opinions on the ctx. It will come in due time:thumbup:

It is definately the heat and humidity. The month of July was horrible, I think realistically I went out detecting maybe once or twice a week, if even that. If it wasn't the heat it was the mosquitoes that drove me away. Hopefully August will bring some relief. But if today was any indication, probably not. We had 87 and humid today.

As far as the CTX 3030 goes. I got to look at one that a friend of mine bought . . . I like the fact that it's waterproof. But he did'nt outhunt me .. maybe because he is still learning how to use it I guess? Anyways I found an Indian cent that he had walked over with the CTX ..

Bryce, well said.

And, and for any of you guys who worry about the Explorer forum dying out due to people moving on...Come on now, you're forgetting how good these Minelabs are. The Explorer is many years younger than the introduction of the first Sovereign model about 20 years ago, and that forum is still hopping with a lot of activity, and people continue to make finds at pounded out sites, and they are well on their way to doing the same in decade #3. That's even using the original model, models after that, as well as the currently made GT.

So where do you think that puts the much newer and younger introduction of the first Explorer (compared to the original Sovereign model) ten years from now? Answer? Even the original Explorer model is still a pup yet. And it will continue to amaze and pull stuff out of "dead" sites for many years to come. Do the math. You've got a while before even that original model sits in a rocking chair to look back on a good life. It's still got wars to fight. :smoke:

The only edge you need is to know your Minelab so well that you become "one" with it. The raw ability of them is already there, you just have to push it to the next level by knowing it like the back of your hand. And a good aftermarket coil can also do wonders as well.

You know, I've got one friend who is always hopping from machine to machine, wanting to try the latest and greatest that he hasn't yet for years. When he isn't doing that, he spends most of his time complaining that all the public sites are dead now. I've been hearing that from him for, oh...I don't know...about 6 or 7 years now maybe. Meanwhile me and my other friends, some using ancient Whites low frequency machines, have been raking in the silver and other good finds all that time, while he seems to talk himself out of hunting most of the time. Owning a Minelab already gives you a huge leg up from others. The rest is effort, knowledge, and skill. Most people don't sharpen those abilities to give them that extra edge and do as well, regardless of what machine they own.

Elton...... we are in the water. but even in the water we are sweating..... baby its hot out there.

No better time than the present to pick up a backup Explorer and accessories at great prices . Although I've seen the E-tracs and CTX's in action and they are great detectors . I don't feel the need to have either .

Thanks for the suggestions Critterhunter , I tried to upload paint and that didn't work out well at all . I'll see if the drop/shrink from the toolbar works with the zoom browser .

But I think I might finally take the leap, assuming we get some rain sometime. I didn't feel compelled enough to get the XS2, SE, or ETrac. I have a couple of sights that I would love to give the CTX a whirl, very high iron and EMI.

Bryce, have you done some comparing against the CTX?

Chris

Really .... paint didnt work for you? I normally just bring up paint and hit resize...... then resize Horz and Vert to 20 percent or so.... save it and bam its done. You can then up load the photo with out it being to large and it saves space on the computer.

I'm just glad I got to see this for myself and to be a small part of the final outcome, and boy was I shocked and that's all I got to say about that for now. But I've been hunting with Bryce for years and I can tell you this much there's nobody better when it comes to testing out these machines and give the most honest opinion you could possibly get, good or bad it's always the truth whether you want to hear it or not and that I respect him for. He's totally open to the new machines that are coming out to see if there's anything better out there that might find us a few more silver coins. I personally can't wait to see what he has to say I'm sure it will be interesting. :surprised: Stay Tuned.
