Slightly Inconsistent Threshold

I recently got a new MXT and it's absolutely amazing at how good a detector it is and the capability it has. I have a couple of questions. After I set the controls to the recommended settings, ground balance, and reduce the threshold to minimum, the threshold is not real smooth. It sounds very slightly crackly and slightly wavers. I am in mid GA and the ground has red clay mixed in. Would reducing the gain be the correct thing to do or should I not worry about the slightly nonconstant tone? I'm finding lots of coins, etc. I'm just concerned that I might not have the detector tuned as well as it could be. Also, I know of no one else in my area that has a high interest in MD'ing and there does not appear to be any clubs in this area. Does anyone know of any clubs nearby (I live right outside of Macon) or is there anyone in the area that wants to hook up for some field trips?
Thanks for any info.

I do not hunt in red clay, however I have recently moved the the coastline in Mass and now hunt salt water beaches. I experienced the same as you are experiencing and found that when the threshold acts up I can quiet it down by pumping the coil up and down 15-20 times on clean ground. I am not an expert but it may work for you. If not try lower gain, sometimes lower gain is better because the machine has less to analyze.
As far as a club try going to www.fmdac.com ,it is the Federation of metal detectors and archaeological clubs main site and they have a lists of clubs all over the country. You may find one near you.
Hope I helped a bit and good luck with your new machine.

LimbLiner; After you ground balance your mxt, try locking it. It should run alot smoother. otherwise I usually dont worry about it, its just inherant of your machine.

I've had my MXT for about 1.5 years. Mine has always had a noisy threshold when left on autotrack. Locking the threshold seems to help some depending on ground conditions. I think most folks will tell you that the MXT is a little noisy. Plenty of post and email to indicate this. Overall it is a great detector that meets the needs for several different types of detecting. HH TonyTX

I also found, for some reason the mxt runs alot smoother in relic mode.

Limbliner, I bet everybody on the forum don't know what a limbline is!Nor have many seen the good ol' Ga red clay! Where in Mid Ga are you located? I don't know of any clubs, but maybe we could get enough folks together? AA

I'm just outside Macon in Jones County near the Town Creek water facility. I've been hunting mostly in the Bibb and Jones county parks so far and a few areas of land being reworked into commercial property. Information on the internet for pre 1900 sites in mid GA (parks, mills, schools, etc.) that could be hunted is sparse. I would appreciate any leads you might have on areas open for MD'ing.
Thanks
