Slave/ID Tags

I was reading a post where slave tags were mentioned. Out here in the dry, wild west I have searched fruitlessly for ID tags that Native Americans, (Apaches) were forced to wear. I first heard about these tags while reading a short story on Geronimo. It was mostly at the San Carlos Indian Reservation in Arizona. I have read some stuff that mentioned San Carlos Apaches often times wandering into New Mexico to meet with other Apache tribes. My family has knowledge of numerous Indian camps in NM whose locations were passed on to us by our grandfather. I know it's a stab in the dark but you never know. Anyway...Have any members ever heard of one of these tags or seen pictures?

Iam the one who posted about slave tags although it is not something Early Americans can be to proud about they existed and they are worth quit a bit of money ive seen tags go for $5000.00 each dated mid 1800,s or earlier The Historic Museum here has a lot of tags on display found locally , i never heard of Native American,s being tagged not at least the way Blacks where perhaps some tribes that resisted being settled on military camps were given ID tags to keep track of them such as Geronimo.and his people that is possible i spent some time looking it up and did not really find much sorry Jim

I tried to copy over to here what I found but it wouldn't let me. Anyway I Googled, "San Carlos Indian Reservation". On the second page I found San Carlos Indian Reservation-Chiricahua Apaches 1872-1884.On the second paragraph it mentions that , "tagging" was started by a Gen. Crook.

General Crook was one of the only whites they trusted, and he got the short end of the stick from the government in relation to how the Native Americans got treated. At least some of them knew that it wasn't his fault about how they were being treated - I think they kept their respect for him as a result of that. I've never heard of them being tagged before, but I know some slaves were, though I'm not sure all were. Really great post.
