Skunked again searching for CW bullets!

Starting to wonder if the Vaq is deep enough or sensitive enough to discriminate lead from iron. Just about every time I go to CW sites the people with the $1K plus machines get bullets, and I do not. Do I need a deeper machine for NC conditions which are very hot and dry now.
Discouraged! I was hunting in super-tuned mode a notch above iron today.

andy are the other using DD coils ? what you may find helpful is to take a Civil was bullet and bury it at the depth s they are being found and see if you can tune in to it , if your soil is Red you may need a DD

I would think as long as your Vaquero is operating "at its peak" and set up correctly it should have no problem finding CW bullets if your coil swings over them. Some parts of NC may have some hotter type ground(around gold and gem areas) and like Kaolinwasher said above a DD type coil would operate better under those conditions.

The Vaquero used to work good for us in Southeast Tennessee, and Northern Georgia for civil war bullets and buttons. The soil in that area was pretty hot. Used the stock coil that came with it. Many guys in that area did like the DD coils though.

Andy,

This is Tony in the club(hearing impaired guy) Have the other guys call you over when they hear what might be a cw bullet and see if you can hear it before its dug.

I got a bullet and button the other day using a very low cost detector. I dont think cost is the factor.

Too bad you live way the heck away from here, id compare signals with ya.

Are the other guys using VLF machines? If the soil is fairly/ highly mineralized a PI machine with GB like the TDI SL would open up doors previously closed to VLF machines. I haven't hunted in NC but I have in TN where one part of a spot a VLF will punch through soil fairly well but in spots you can't hit a 3 ringer 3-4" down with any VLF.

Thanks Tony--I went with Chris and he had found most of his stuff before I got there. He did rebury a bullet and I could hear it, but the problem was I was digging so much iron even though I was DISCing out most iron but I did not want to lose the lead signal by going too high.
Andy

Thanks. The soil isn't highly mineralized but there is a lot of iron. The ground was extremely hard and dry though, and the other guy was using an XP Deux but I think he made most of his finds earlier in the morning--maybe ground moisture had something to do with it.

I didn't use the double Dd yesterday because I wanted to use the stock that Rusty retuned. I also used the 5 3/4 " coil. The ground was very dry but not heavily mineralized. I will try to did an 8 to 10 " hole and bury some minnieballs and see what coil and settings work best. At present it is too damn hot and dry here!
Thanks for the advice

Did you super tune the Vaquero? if so then there is the problem! running a Vaquero super tuned for deep targets and it goes pretty much all metal, I'd say your discrimination ability actually maxed out at around 5" or so.
So, yes! the Tejon would do better in maintaining its discrimination ability to its full depth.

Mark

Hombre , I cant answer your question but I find lead bullets all the time with a Vaquero. Minnie balls , round balls , 22 calibers ....My finds may not be as deep as you need to go.

I've owned 2 Vaq's and 3 Tejons. It's not like you will get 3-4 more inches with a Tejon vs a Vaquero. The Tejon is a little bit deeper but not enough that I would buy another beep and dig to have in the stable for a marginal depth advantage. I think my favorite part about the Tejon was the pinpoint/ second disc toggle switch which eliminated some of the thumbing of the disc knob like you do on a Vaq

Thanks for the info. I wanted to speak to someone who owned both. I love my VAQ but I am getting so frustrated not finding CW bullets that other people are finding. Even supertuning or using all metal or a 10x12 SEF coil!
Andy from Hillsborough

In MAX depth the Vaquero may be as deep as the Tejon, but! running MAX depth on both you will find that the Tejon will maintain WAY more usable discrimination that the Vaquero does, once you "Super Tune" the Vaquero you will notice at the increased depth that it start to have a love for iron (nails screws). The Tejon would give you much better discrimination control at its max depth.

Mark

Absolutely agree with Mark! A stable running Tejon is probaly much more usable than a superT vaquero in my experience. To just compare raw depth in a test bed might be ok but when you get out on the real world in a spot loaded with iron I found I could not run the Vaq super tuned without digging a truck load of iron.

Andy-

Keep in mind that Chris is one of those guys that can probably find bullets with a paper plate taped to end of a stick while you or anyone else uses HIS tector and still finds nothing.

The time I tried you vaq, it ground balanced properly, seemed to operate smooth etc.

Maybe you got some bad carma going on?

Trust me on this, your 'first' bullet will be the absolute most difficult to find. After you dig your first, the rest seem to happen much easier.

You tecting during the week now? Maybe you can use my unit AND I will use yours and see what happens....

Later-

Tony

Would love to detect with you again during the week-- once the temperature drops a bit!! and we get some rain. The ground was like a rock.
