Ski Hill finds

Well-known member
Well despite stating in my other post that I was holding off until after the 105 degree weather, I made a "swing" for it lol. Man is it HOT (at 8am) 92 @ degrees with what feels like 5000% humidity bearing down on my body lol. By 9:20am I was drenched. I did manage some neat finds on the ski hill. Two wheats from the 1940's and a couple pieces of jewelry amongst the junk. The butterfly and the heart shaped jewelry registered 173 ( sounded smooth and solid) on the meter no matter what angle I was at. I compare this to the gazillion of bottlecaps found that fall within this numerical range which (to me) sound grainy and hollow.

Thanks for looking.- Jim

You are coming right along with the learning of the Sovereign tones as you can see the difference in the pull tabs, screw caps and other trash items compared to some of the better finds. The thing I have learned over the years with the Sovereign is after hearing trash signals one after another I seem to like to dig anything that is different then you normally hear, so I do dig a lot of other odd shape trash too, but also get some interesting finds. If it sounds deep I always like to dig as normal trash most of the time is not deep unless the area has been filled or tilled. Some of the gold rings I have found has that smoother signal than trash, but still dig trash too. I got a 10K gold ring this past month at a Private yard I got permission to hunt that read 157 on the meter, but just sounded smoother is why I dug it. The rest of the yard just had new coins in it and wondered if had been filled or if someone had been over it as the house was built in 1950.

Good luck and I bet we are going to see many more good find by you as you seem to be learning your Sovereign well.

Rick

Thanks Rick for your confidence! I am starting to understand some of the different tones and have had the GT for several months now. Learning the tones sure does come with time in the field and digging lots of targets. ( having hearing loss, some tones I can not dicipher between good and not so good targets) However, I am learning the bottlecaps noises and they seem to have a pattern of being grainy & hollow. I am not even sure if others (such as yourself) hear them like this. Stay tuned more finds to come :)

I too am very hard of hearing as my high tones I am at 110% which is total while others are 50-80% gone, but can still hear the tones of the Sovereigns as they are not real high pitched unless you do a mod and set them high then I don't hear them or very weak. on my E-Trac when the variability is set at max the hiogh tone become a null for me, so I find the way they are set at the factory is perfect for me. I found the only headphones on the Sovereign that are loud enough is the Timber wolfs, but not loud enough on the E-Trac where the Troy Pro work the best, but these are not loud enough for the Sovereigns. Well I found a new set that is loud enough on either one as one of my customer brought them in and are made by Detector Pro makers of the Gray Ghost for a special order for one of their dealers, These are called the Bushmasters which are some great headphones that will work on my E-Trac or Sovereigns. Not sure the name of the dealer that had them made, but your local dealer can get them if they do any business with the Wholesaler called Outdoor Outfitters as they are the suppliers of these great headphones that are loud for us with bad hearing.
I may swing slower than many and with a good set of headphones i seem to hear those deeper and those close to trash better than they do, this is why if it is trashy or could hold some deep older finds I tell people to go slow and listen to those hint of a good signal and once you do and have some experience you will know what to do.

Good luck

Jim, you are on the hot trail of a gold ring , I tell you what i have found , I have 10 gold rings of difrent sizesand they all sound diffrent and they all could pass for a pull tab ,canslaw, bottletop , and even a metal beer top I think thear is lots of rings but so many detectorist just pass them over thinking its a pull tab or can slaw personaly i dig anything that gives a repeatable signal weather high or low Iron usally nulls as you know and gives of spikes of sound but if somthing is farting thru hard it may be a goodie keep at that hill probly more than one ring on it can you Imagine if a ring fell off it would go 200 feet befor it came to rest they would never find it in all that trash and I hope you bring water with and salt , we just had that nasty weather hear that was badd 81 dew point and 95 short hunt bro

Gunnar tell me where that hot trail is lol. You are right Gunnar about this whole ring thing. I was thinking that today as many multiple tones were ringing in my ears. It was SO HOT I just didn't want to get down and dig lol Well the stopping area for the ski hill is now a paved basketball court, parking lot and kiddie playground that has been done over BUT the ski hill is still there :) I certainly plan to hit this place at least a 1000 times more. So many people tell me that I am wasting my time in this park... I feel there is more. Although the good cherry pickin' days are over, now it is sovereign GT pickin' time.

Jim,I agree with Rick he knows the Sovereign. This season I have gone out of my way to dig more targets in the pull tab range. So far two gold for me a 14k ring over 11grms and a 10k 3grms.By the way the large 14k rock solid at 144 not even a hint of a bounce. Unusual numbers always catch my attention.Good Luck

Hi Ron,
how did the other ring act? Was it a solid response or did it jump / waver in tone and ID? I remember one signal that caught my attention and that was a pretty firm 133 on my meter. It ended up being a broken pulltab. I have been digging more of these odd signals since my ring post lol I want to find my first gold ring (preferably with a big diamond on top lol) HH - Jim

Jim,I had a 550 meter on the Sovereign calibrated to 480 for a US Quarter. The 10k 3grm 441, last season found a 14K 5grm with the same calibration with the 550 rock solid 444.LOL fours are lucky numbers.Like Rick said unusual rock solid numbers are worth checking.

Thanks for the tip! Solid odd numbers are being stored in my detectorist memory lol.
