Sixteen silver day and quarter trifecta!

Nick A

New member
Arrived at the site in the am and in the first hour I got a 1903-O Barber quarter, not much else for a long while except a buffalo and some wheats. Got a silver Roosie (don't know which) next to a dead plug. My host got a few silver and wheats as well, but the ground was dry and the heat was oppressive, no digging pennies today if it could be avoided. Took a break and wandered a bit more and my friend decided he'd done all he could do for the day and took off about noontime. I continued to hunt, picked up a few silver dimes 1936 and 1946, one right next to someone else's dead plug again. Someone else had been detecting this site recently and left some messy plugs :veryangry: - one even had a clad quarter laying right next to it. (Found out later this person was a site poacher and had fibbed to get in :veryangry: ) Please don't be a site poacher. That's just wrong. There are plenty of places to detect without stealing a buddy's site. If you want to go back, ask your friend, don't sneak in, and if you do sneak in, don't leave the place a flippin mess. :veryangry:

So after another break, it was 2:30 and I had to be on the road by 5:00, so I decided to put the rally cap on. Heat stroke be damned. :stretcher: I put new batteries in and headed for the hill. I was going to grid hard. Hit two silver Roosies right off the bat, full steam ahead. Silver was flowing now, as was the sweat. I wasn't digging anything clad, passed up at least $10 in quarters and 500 pennies, I'm sure. Just kept going until 4:45 when I just couldn't do it anymore. I was pushing so hard at the end I was tossing the silver in my pouch to keep going.

So, best silver day ever with SIXTEEN silver coins, an incredible silver quarter trifecta - Barber, SLQ and Washington - among FIVE silver quarters for the day (and this the day after I just got THREE silver quarters in one hunt yesterday). 1943 half, 1903-O, no date, 1943, 1944, 1954 quarters and dimes 1936, 1942D, 1945, 1946, 1948D, 1952, 1954, 1954D, 1961D, 1964. And an assortment of clad and some wheats. I have not looked at the wheats yet, I know I have a few teens ones in there and not sure of the date on the buffalo nickel either.

Man-o-man!! You really cleaned up. That's a silver bonanza you got there. When you say you passed up a lot of clad and quarters, how did you know they weren't silver? Great job!

I know those quarters I passed up weren't silver because silver tone is higher than clad, and they were essentially surface to 1" deep. All read solid CO 47. All the silver was at least 4" deep at this location. I did dig some clad quarters that were 3-5" deep so as not to miss possible silver. I know some places silver can be shallow, but that was not the case at this site.

What kind of site where you hitting, Nick? Sounds like a virgin site. Hope you have many more days like this one.

Not a virgin site, there were plenty of dead plugs around and I know of a minimum of a half dozen people who have hunted it. One guy has gotten over 150 silver from it over time and another got over 25 in one day. It has just been hunted less than public parks. The site is a privately owned park.

Great day Nick, Wish I could find that much silver in one day.

I have to ask as I keep reading that silver makes a higher or sweater sound than clad. What are people talking about? I obviously don't have my setting set close to this as the coins all sound about the same. A dime sounds like a dime silver or clad. A silver quarter sounds like a state quarter just usually deeper. I am very new to the hobby but I for the life of me can't hear the difference on my E-trac.

Dave

Congrats NICK.....I know the feeling, and it will not come often.....Glad you got Yours., Dave

Hey Dave, how do you have your tones set up? I think you can set the variability of the tones to a maximum of 30. If you set it to the max, you will notice the differences in sound. If you already have it at max, you may not have the ears for it, or maybe a good quality set of headphones might help? I use Grey Ghosts and like them a lot. I tried Ratphones and Jolly Rogers, but I am happiest with the Ghosts. Anyhow, I did not realize the subtle differences in tones immediately after getting the E-Trac. After putting a lot of hours in hunting, now I can pretty clearly hear the difference.

Nick, Congrats on some superb finds! You are having a great year. Thanks for all your posts. I enjoy reading them.

Keep the silver flowing, and thanks for the tips. I think the E-Trac is a great investment - but it is just that. You need to invest the time to get to know it to truly get all the dividends.

Nick,

I use Sunray Pro Gold Headphones. I have had my variability to 30 and could not hear a difference so I have backed it down to 22 or so and it sounds different just not sure that I can tell the difference in the silver to clad though. With that said I have not found but one silver dime since I started playing with the settings. Perhaps I just need to go find more silver to hear the difference?

Thanks for the answers though.

HH,

Dave

I set my detector to multi tones and raised the variability to 30. A silver Washington and a clad Washington sounded the same. However when I compared a clad dime with the silver Washington, the silver quarter definitely gave the higher tone.
