I got the six shooter today. Unfortunately it's one of those with the skewed VDI numbers and category (US dime reads out as a copper penny and quarter reads out as a dime). I was hoping to get a "fixed" one as we are now months away from when the problem was first discovered. I'll contact my dealer and see if I can get a good one. There are a few numbers on the ear of the coil which probably indicate the manufacturing date. Mine has a 6 M on it and just beneath it has the numbers 1 088.
First impressions: The coil is light. As much as I like the balance of the 950 on the MX7, this 6 inch coil feels fantastic. Construction seems very solid and neat. It looks as though the coil cover was carefully epoxied right on the coil itself. Judging by the surface texture on the underside, a coil cover seems completely unnecessary on this one. I took it out in the backyard to give it a few swings. The whole yard has been done a dozen times with each detector I have used. The only targets left are either bits of iron or tin pieces near the house (probably from the roof being redone at some time). Within a few minutes I managed to get a solid readout in the low nickel, pull tab range at 2 inches. Every detector has missed this and I know I have been on that very spot many times. It turned out to be a mini washer (I mean really tiny, tiny enough that my pin pointer had a real hard time finding it) . I was impressed. The coil and detector obviously managed to unmask this target where every other had failed including the MX7 with the 950 coil. I only did about a quarter of the backyard.
My second observation is that the coil seems substantially more stable than the 950. By more stable I mean that there are less ghost signals or falsing with same settings. I would have to go to some place where the amount of trash is more substantial to really be sure but that is my immediate impression after only a few minutes with the new coil.
I'm hoping that if I send it back, I can get one quickly because I get the feeling I'm really going to like it.
