Six Months Hunting With The Exp.2

I don't post here much...mostly lurk and read trying to learn as much as I can.

I have been relic hunting here in VA. for over 30 years now and most of that time I have been strictly a Whites user. I live in Orange County, VA. and this area is known to have some of the worst ground anywhere. I bought my Exp. 2, 6 months ago as I feel that with it's capabilities it will allow me to find more relics in the iron infested camps that I hunt around here. I have found though that it's a definite learning curve to hunting with it in this highly mineralized ground. I was actually pathetic when I first started hunting with it as I was trying to use it like the Whites that I'm so familiar with...I had even thought of busting it up against a tree on more than one occasion...lol I don't give up easily and now things are starting to click for me. I have been making some finds in areas that were thought to be "dug out" for years.... and all of my finds have been mixed in the iron trash...there are no more easy targets around here...lol Without going into alot of boring details about different settings etc. I will say that it's a different ball game hunting with this machine in really bad ground compared to hunting in good ground, but, once you find the right combination and technique for your area, it will definitely surpass any other detector you have ever used. I know I still have a very long way to go to learning this detector but as of now I'm actually enjoying it more than ever.

Don,

I often read the forums for other detectors... And am darn glad I bought an explorer. I did quite well from the get-go but still believe it takes a year or more to really understand what the machine is telling you.

Still learning,

Chris

Hello DonB,
I live in an old gold mining town where their is lots of trash and highly mineralized ground, and have been using a MineLab Quattro. At first I felt the the same way you did, but got to the point where I started to like it, the problem was that my wife liked it too, so I ended up having to buy an other unit the Ex2. Now I'm going through the learning process all over again, I have tried to follow advice and as a starter run it in factory set mode but find the curser jumps all over from left to right, up and down so I ignore the screen and focus on sounds only, while I run in Ferrus sounds. I dig all high pitched sounds only to find old axe heads and ferrous junk even though the curser will be bouncing mostly upper right.
So I count to ten, take a deep breath and start all over. When this does not work I turn the threshold down till I can't hear the machine nagging me. I suppose it's a bit like going fishing without a worm on the hook. That gives me some peace for a while and if this doesn't work, I just go home.
Could you please go into the boring details about different settings
even just to get me started. Much appreciated.
Regards Garry
PS At the risk of repeating what has already been said on the forum, please help. Even if someone else has a good starter program for High Trash, mineralized ground could you please share it with me because in factory mode I struggle.

Hey Garry...I have found that in my area the most important setting is the sensitivity. I run it in ferrous, varibility 10, gain 10 and deep on and hunt in iron mask -16 and just listen to the tones. At first I couldn't convince myself to turn the sens. down to a stable level. I will start at a site and adjust the sens. in manual to where I get no drumming noise from the mineralization, no matter how low I have to set it... if the ground doesn't change alot I'll just run it in manual...if the ground changes every few feet, I'll run it in auto. I pay no attention to the screen and hunt by tone only. I also hunt mostly with a sunray 8" coil...I found that no matter how low in sens. I have to set it at, that it still goes deeper than any other machine I've used around here. Hope this helps some...

Thanks Chris....I'll post here on my progress as I learn more about this detector...I'm also glad I got the Exp.2... now that I'm starting to understand it better.

Thanks Don,
For you help I went out after work last night and set up Ex2 just as you suggested and it run almost like the Quattro I don't mind running it in all metal, what I did find was that Ex2 resets it self quicker than the Q, and in Pinpoint the target moves around a little put settles down.
So after last night I feel much better about the Ex2 and I know I'm going to like it.
Thanks again,
Garry

Pinpoint has an auto shrink circuit to settle the target down so we can find the exact center of the target.

G'day Cody, I noticed this auto shrink seems to work if this is what it's called, also the Ex2 seems to pick up a target beyond the diametre of the coil, does this mean its more powerful than say the Quattro, and is this the reason some dig empty holes because they may not be pinpointing correctly?
