Since most of us are snowed in I would like to show you the handle on a rod asm I'm working on.

This handle asm is a stock Handle for either a CZ20 or 1280X. The great thing about this handle its cheap, sturdy and easy to install.I need to get the foam installed. These actually are made so two halves just bolt together with a notch that fits in a hole same size as one of the lock pins. There are a lot of those ugly bicycle guard bars bent in a bad angle that make most of us dizzy.Has a good feel and look.More than one way to skin a cat. Not sure why these would make you dizzy but who knows?
While I no longer use a 1280x detector I had for 16 years as many as twice a year it was needed to replace that fiberglass rod that made up the handle. I finally made my own out of aluminum. They just don't last that long using them 30 to 40 hrs a week in the water and sand. The holes always became elongated and the slop was just too annoying. The bent Bicycle handle that I use today on all but one of my detectors gives me that great advantage of not holding the detector on the the return swing which equals 50% of swinging and allows my hand to relax. This truly makes for 8 plus hr hunting days.
I am sure your design is of a great choice and will work well for you, and others. Its nice to see forum members taking there time to improve hunting for all.

BC NJ the Sovereign is no light weight but compared to a CZ 20 or 1280 it puts less stress on the rod assembly. The metal screws in a salt/sand environment is probably a weak link but on land and occasional use on a fresh water beach I don't see a problem. The true test is when used in the field.I have made handles out of aluminum that have worked very well.I like the stock set up Plugger uses for his rod asm kinda of looks like a bike guard but straight.I disagree been to the bike shops and researched the dog legged handle I"m not convinced they work better that a straight one.You should let the manufacturers know how well they work so they can get these crooked handles into production.I'm taking my time to help these misguided individuals see the light before they get arthritis and carpal tunnel. HH Ron

I use a bicycle handle on my straight shaft and love it... it has an almost 45 degree bend in it which allows to either hold the straight part of it or use the 45 bend to lay on top of my hand and its almost weightless at that point... I liked my Whites TDI rod with the straight handle, but it didn't allow for the hang on hand effect the 45 gives me.

Fir469,are you right or left handed? I'm left handed and use my right hand to swing the detector and my left is used for digging. Thanks Ron

right handed, swing with right, shovel in left. This is the grip I use... I couldn't find the brand I have online but this one is almost exactly the same.

I like that one Ron, where can I get one? Looking for one that I can mount a trigger switch too, for my other excal. Looks like I could mount the switch at the top/front of yours. Let me know how it feels on your next hunt.............If any one is not happy with there curved bike handle, you can change them out {if there not a one piece} to the straight just by heating with a propane torch at the joint..they are just glued. And the aluminum tube 6061 that is used for the straight shaft on the excal will fit perfect...7/8 .049 wall, some use the .065, that you may have to hammer on.

Mine works good, but I think yours might be the better..keep us informed on your next outing.

fir469 ,
I just built a straight shaft for my AT Pro , and I'm using the exact bars you have just pictured ...If you heat them with a benzomatic , you can bend them to whatever shape you want ..... The top of the bars on mine are now parrallel with the straight shaft and the control module from the AT Pro will mount on top of it !!..... It will be pretty sharp when I'm done and very light weight !!...... I bought enough gear to make 6 of these straight shafts and I don't feel the least bit dizzy !!..... Maybe it hasn't hit me yet ???.....:stars: .......Jim

Thats a real nice setup your making there Ron. I like the whites rods and the handle is about the same. Never found a bicycle handle like some guys like to fit my hand right, Im to wide in the palm and dont like that crunched feel when I hunt. I do like the bend in them but the lower portion needs to be longer for me to use them.

This time we got some rain instead of snow and the ground is visible again in my yard. Hoping to get out this Saturday after work.

Neil

thats what i use!!!!!!!!!! perfect angle! i agree with you 100%!!!!!!!!!

fisher of course! e-bay has them but im sure at a mark-up and overpriced shipping!

Seeker41,got this one from a Michigan metal detector dealer off of Ebay for $7.99 plus a couple of bucks for shipping.

Neil,we are going to get a foot of snow(just plowed my drive way 1/4 mile) probably won't see the ground for a while.I always liked the handles Plugger used they can adjust on the shaft.Got rid of my stock GT handle on a sale should have kept. But I think this handle will work better for me.

Jim,my farrier is coming to shoe the horses in a couple of weeks. You just answered my question about bending I'll pick one up at the bike shop see if he can forge the curve out. Thanks Ron

Ron,
Try to find a piece of pipe that will fit OVER the bicycle bar ....A piece of 1 inch will do the trick that is about 2-3 ft long ........Clamp the bike bar end on a piece of pipe and put it in a vice to hold it .....As you heat the handlebar end , you slide the 1 inch lever over it , and slowly re-bend the Handlebar end ......Keep the flame of the torch moving around the the handlebar end so you don't blow a hole in it and it is heated evenly ......Pry with the lever slowly to the desired angle , or whatever you are wanting to do with it ...... I took that weird angle out of the bar and brought it parallel with the straight shaft that I built .....Hope this helps ....Jim

Jim, did you try a 2 cell lipo in the AT pro yet? Did you measure voltage of new AA cells to see if they are more than 1.5V to make it safe for a 8.4V 2 cell lipo?

The bike end bars I used on my GT land and water shafts have bends in them and they work great. Even more comfortable than a straight grip.

Thanks Ron for the Idea on the CZ handle, just finished the handle..feels good, and easy access to the PP button
