Simple research usually requires additional work.

One old school in my area has what looks like an old football field including old rusted goal post. This football field produced some finds but nothing that old for a play ground that was there since 1937.My first hot tip was the bleachers were at the further west corner, which was overlooked by hunters. After a three hour search nothing other than a couple of 60s Lincolns. My wife Pam and I was invited to the Lone Ranger movie with Darrell and Carla, friends and both(history buffs) have lived in Oxford all their lives. We stopped by their place in town after the show and Darrell and I had a few beers.Their house is only a couple of blocks from this location so the Axeford School field was brought up.Darrell use to play football for the old Oxford High school and said the High School always use this field and Axeford was a junior high, with a distance mile there and and back his coach would say.Darrell said the Axeford school had a wing added, which was built over most of the old football field and track area, but the old bleaches site now had a tot lot built over them. The old field area was partial ,but there was still some open ground that should be undisturbed. My friends and I have always searched the other field which isn't even close to this older field area.I have only had one quick search in the old bleacher area it did produce a 1924 wheat and three more wheat's from the 40s so it does look promising.HH Ron

Good luck Ron. Sounds like you might be on to something. Having someone with first hand knowledge of the site makes it so much easier. Joe

I had an old amish guy back home who know a lot of history of various places just because his family and amish friends had owned property for years in the area. I hunted an old school he went to school at as a boy.....he was well into his 80s. Most hunters has hunted around the school it self, but he showed me the old soft ball field, where trees had been that kids climbed in, the basketball court area, and the play ground.... which happened to be in his field. I picked up a lot of very old kids toys, knives, and coins. There may well still be more there than you realize. Good hunting Ron.

Dew,yea we would all probably be surprised how a little more information would breath life back into some of our old hunt sites. Thanks Ron

hmmmm .... kinda makes want to go down to the old folks home and strike up a few conversations..... I did have an oldtimer in my town tell about a field nearby where church picnics were held back in the 40s and 50s, but unfortunately he is no longer with us and I cant remember which field he was talking about....

Problem with these old folks homes people there have memory issues. There are a lot of older people in our communities that still remember dates, people and events.Museums are the best place for information, they have the old photos, where and what event took place. Most important are the people who work at these Museums.I like to listen someone tell a story in detail that you can't find in the archives or old papers.I have only lived in Oxford for 11 yrs.My first day at the Museum last year I was introduced to Jack.He asked if I lived in the city and I named the street in the township.Jack said he was unsure about the location of my farm.Later on he told me a story about 15 yrs ago he was the Fire Chief for Oxford and got two fire calls at 4am in the morning. One place the barn caught on fire and by the time they reached the site the horses and goat were burned and died in their stalls, his look I'll never forget this farm, which is now Barnanza Farm my home. Thanks Ron
