Simple Electrolysis setup cleaned a tough find

Today I decided to try my hand at building my own electrolysis system. I found the article that describes how to do it and I went for it. Instead of using a glass and inserting a stainless steel spoon, I substituted a stainless cat food bowl. I found an old wall wort 12V 1300 mA power supply, cut off the adapter and soldered on two alligator clips. I clipped the positive lead to the stainless bowl and the negative lead to the coin. I filled it with tap water and then added 4 tablespoons of salt.Making sure the coin was not touching the bowl, I plugged it in and let it run for 10 minutes. I was amazed at how dirty the water got for just one coin. It did a fantastic job cleaning the coin without any damage to it. Any questions please ask...

Before and after photos of the coin (PS Can anyone identify this coin or medallion?)

Neat find and it cleaned up nicely with the electrolysis. I'm not sure who issued it but, based on my high school German, I think it says 'Remberence of the 4th of July". I'm not sure what Cassel means (possibly a family name or the name of a city?) My guess it was used in a German speaking region of the US. By the way, what's the size of this piece? Nice find!

The size is the same as a quarter. I found it in St. Mary's City, Maryland about 15 years ago and been carring it around ever since. It was by far my "dirtiest" coin (Medallion). I thought nothing could clean this. Thanks for the translation, that helps alot!

I did another medallion to see if my good results were repeatable. I am also including pictures of the setup to show how extremely easy it is to put together.

That's a nice find - issued at the Colombian Exposition in Chicago in 1892 to celebrate Columbus's discovery of the US. It cleaned up nicely too. You might want to research the St. Mary's, MD area newspapers around the 4th of July in 1872 to see if any information shows up your Cassel 1872 medal. HH

Thanks for your feedback.... I will try to research as you describe. Not having any luck using the words on the medal on the internet.
