Silverware Item?

A

This item is silverplated. Does not appear to be a spoon, as it is flat. It is hard to see the markings, but has two. First is Holmes & Edwards XIV, Second marking is Lindley's Pat.May 29 89. I have two questions? Does anyone know anything about Holmes & Edwards XIV? The second question is, what is this item?
Thanks
Earl

Holmes & Edwards XIV are Silverware manufacturers. Lots of their stuff is on E-Bay. It may be that Lindley is a pattern name, but haven't been able to confirm that. Don't know what your item is. Haven't seen anything close to it.

I haven't had any luck looking thru the U.S. patents for this item. Nothing for that Pat. date matches that item. Is there any kind of a number on it?

Ochoescudo just about nailed it!
It's a julep strainer, patented by Charles O. Lindley of Bridgeport, CT on May 28, 1889. Pat. #404,204.
A link is attached. When the page loads, click on the "Images" button.
Best of luck,
Buckram

Thanks for finding that. I was looking for a May 29th date like Earl mentioned, and couldn't find one. They skipped from the 28th to June 4th.

I thought, at first glance, it might've been a rug beater! <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">
