I'm thinking of buying a 12x10 coil for my Silver

if your mating it to the silver i don't think you should have a prob, with this combo it will go real deep but gets nose heavy but if your covering fields then this is ideal, i remember digging a steel toe from a boot close to 16" i almost gave up, if the soil is mild the silver and the 12 x 10 " coil combo will suprise you!

amcjavelin, thanks for answering my questions about the silver

i could air test a quarter at 16" and i use to have silver bangle bracelet and that would get 20" no bull i was really impressed, iwould bring a small foot shovel with you!

It may or may not ground balance properly on the Silver because of the Fixed GB. All you can do is try it. If there is a problem the coils and the detector would need to find there way back to Tesoro and have them set the ground balance for the coils. In mild ground it may be O.K.

amcjavelin, i sure hope the new coil will do that on my silver, those are awesome air tests. how can a 240.00 machine do that? i don't think the cz 70 i had would do those kinds of air tests and it was one deep mo fo. i was thinking about buying another machine for deeper coins but this might save me a few hundred bucks by just buying the 12x10 coil.
i will be ordering my new coil in a few days and will let you know how it works on my machine...thanks everyone for your help.............roger

The Silver uMax and 12x10 concentric coil is one of the best kept secrets of our time. I have owned several of these setups and have convinced at least one top Civil War relic digger to use it too.

What depth will it get? I really don't know because long time buried objects detect much differently than fresh buried objects. Without getting carried away I comment on depth.

The stock Silver uMax with 8" "donut" coil will go about 6 inches deep on the most common coin (penny). The 12x10 concentric will add about 2.5 inches to that depth. This is the absolute extreme for any VLF (except the Nexus) regardless of claims made. Most VLF detectors only get 5-6 inches on buried pennies and dimes (5-5.5 inches on dimes and 6" on modern pennies). However, most will detect copper cents and nickels deeper due to the alloy of the coins.

So, your Silver should gain at least 2 inches of depth for modern pennies and clad dimes.

I have found that nickels seem to detect much deeper. You probably will gain up to 4 inches more depth on nickels and large cents (over the 8" coil). Long time buried copper pennies gain about an inch over modern pennies.

Under ideal soil and weather conditions:

The Silver uMax with stock coil:
Dime: 5.5 inches
Memorial Cent: 6 inches
Nickels: 7 inches
Quarter: 6.5 inches
Large cents: 9 inches

The Silver with 12x10 coil:
Dime: 7.5 inches
Memorial cent: 8 inches
Nickel: up to about 11 inches
Quarter: up to about 10 inches
Large cents: up to about 13 inches

A 3-Ringer bullet: up to about 13 inches
A USA CW Buckle: up to about 20 inches deep.

These figures come from years of testing with 3 different Silver uMax machines fitted with the 12x10 concentric coil. I don't say these are 100% accurate. Granted, I'm doing some guessing and estimating because most of these depths came from long time buried objects and I often didn't have a ruler with me. Then too, with all digging there is the "over-dig" problem. But, I honestly believe these figures are within reason and close to the actual situation.

But once again, the vast majority of the time we're all hunting only about 6-7 inches due to our hunting habits and the abilities of the average machine.

Tfor2, thanks for the great post, that is exactly what i was wanting to see. looks like that coil will be a killer on some old worked out sites that produced some nice finds in the past. thanks for taking the time to post the information.......................roger

hey i'm no bullshit artist that was my experience, the silver was the machine that convinced me that tesoro was my new machine when Tfor2 on his chart there, it's pretty dead on on the same things i dug up, the silver i think is one of the best introductory machines on the market because of the depth it gets, coil selection and lifetime warranty, joe i would say if you plan on using this set up as your main stay then i would send the coil in and unit back to the factory to fine tune in and possibly you might even gain more, just so everybody knows, iwould never intentionaly mislead anyone, as a fellow detectorist we need more to get in the hobby and some how preserve the places we have at the moment to detect, and i thank everyone that has answered my questions in the past!

amcjavelin, right now my silver umax is my only machine. i have tried other machines with all the bells and whistles and always seem to have better luck with a simple beep and dig detector. the silver umax was always the detector i seemed to pick up even when i had other more expensive detectors and it found more good targets than most of the others.
i will try the new coil soon as the weather clears up and may end up sending the detector and all my coils to tesoro to get it fine tuned. i really appreciate everyones input on my questions. happy hunting..........roger

I find the big 12x10 a little to big and makes my hunting cumbersome. I have the 8x9 web and find its a perfect fit. I am pulling coins as deep as my El Dorado. I am going to throw one on my wife's Cutlass so I can get my Silver back. I did not see the difference in depth with the bigfoot coil, some people say they do and that the 8x9 is no better than the round 8 but I see the results when I hunt. I sold that big fat coil after just one season. Air tests are one thing, digging coins is another.
The wifes first hunt with the Silver and 8x9 web coil, she pulled a record 15 nickels, I cant get it back from her.

this is what it boils down to what the target is in the ground and type of soil it is, if and when you do send it in joe grab a soil sample of where your going to hunt or most often places your going to be and that way they can match it up even better, iknow what you mean by going back to beep and dig before i had the my silver i had the whites m6 and found coins the whites left behind!
