Silver UMax with a 5.75 coil

Just received an older Silver Umax with the threshold tuning from Ebay and a 5.75 coil that I ordered from a dealer. With bad weather and little time I could only run a quick air test for both coils to get a idea how the smaller coil would perform. OK now for the test. (With Headphones)The Silver was set at lowest discrimination with the max sensitivity, and measured with a cardboard ruler. The maxi-um air test was a little erratic with chirping and popping because I was reaching out as far as possible on both coils. First results the 5.75 Quarter 9inches, Penny 9inches, Dime 8inches, Nickle 9inches.Next with the 8inch coil I only gained an inch on each coin. The smaller coil gave a very sharp clear signal at seven inches on each coin. The larger coil does cover a wider area but is not as quick and sharp at seven inches.I was impressed with the air test and now ready to see how this setup will work in the field. Thanks Ron

Update It rained the whole time and then turned to snow on the day I try ed the 5.75 coil with the Silver Saber. I only found newer coins, this was the first time I used a Tesoro. What a great little metal detector. Ron

I used the 5.75 coil yesterday at a school in Pontiac MI.This school has a cornerstone dated 1927 and has been worked extensively.Temps for the last four days are below freezing. With concrete ground to dig the search and recovery was very slow. After a couple hours of metal detecting I held the pinpoint button in with a little threshold noise this seemed to widen my search scan and give max depth at the same time. With this method I would recheck the target and only dig the ones picked up on discrimination. No wheat's or silver was found but four mid to late sixties pennies at about 5 to 6 inches down were dug up around the shade area of a old tree. Any tips or feedback appreciated. Ron

The weather this month has been bitter cold in Michigan, which means no detecting. I took two cat litter trays one 4inch deep the other 5inch deep and filled each one with sand from our out door horse arena. I placed a clad quarter dead center in the five inch and a dime in the four inch before filling each to the top with moist sand. The wind has gusts of 30mph so I will take these boxes in the garage and do the experiment. The cement floor was check for a metal response before placing the trays on the floor.Four different detectors would be used to check these targets. First a old model Compass Coin Hustler 1 with a 6inch coil no response on either target no matter how much threshold. Next a Whites Prizm 3 at factory setting,no response to either target. With sensitivity all the way up no response, but with the pinpoint mode both targets detected. The third detector Tesoro Silver Saber with a 5.75 coil discriminate set at 4 sensitivity at 9 each one of the targets detected. Finally a Fischer ID Exel this detector doesn't match the Prizm or the Silver on an air test, but gave the best signal off all even at the factory setting. The Silver out performed the Prizm even with a smaller search coil. Ron

This is probably an unusual question?I need to sell one of these and keep two detectors. The Tesoro Silver Saber,Prizm 3,or the Fischer ID Exel. The detector's primary use coin shooting parks, schools and yards. OK which one would you sell. Thanks Ron
