Silver uMax vs. Cibola

I have owned a Silver uMax for a couple months, and it has been incredible. My purchase happened about the time I got permission to hunt a virgin Civil War camp. This little machine will snipe out good targets amongst trash, easier than any machine I've ever owned. I just bought a Cibola, and used it today with some luck. The Cibola does not seem to be as "stable", and the Silver air-tests just as good. I thought I'd be upgrading, but don't know. The Cibola is a good machine, but I think I'll keep Silver as my regular work machine. I wonder if the round search coil is better than the eliptical? Any opinions? It seems that the Cibola wants to give "trashy" signals to good items(dug some as an afterthought), while I can usually tell what I'm going to dig with the Silver. Perhaps I'm just not used to the Cibola yet.

Give The Cibola a chance, you will like it!! I have a Vaquero and a Cibola and I use my Vaquero in tough ground where the Cicola is one
I grab if I just want to shoot a park or playground. Don't get me wrong the Cib goes just as deep as the "Cowboy"!!!!

It is a better machine in my opinion. The new coils are definately hotter than the older ones.

I'd give the Cibola a fair chance also. I have the Cibola and Teon with stock coils, and a 575 coil. I had only a few times where I need to turn the sens down a bit to stabilize the machine. Also - two machines gives one as a backup.

Thanks for the comments. I will give the Cib a little more time, but I REALLY have confidence in the Silver. I hunt in alot of iron trash at the Civil War camp site, but I have been pulling some good relics out of there. Nothing that I have dug has been very deep, so maybe that's why I bonded with the Silver. But, with sensitivity at 9 or 10, it goes pleny deep, especially larger iron objects(but I'm after brass and lead). Also, with Rheumatoid Arthritis, the Silver seems to be better balanced. But, I've had days at the same site that I didn't "set the world on fire" with the Silver, so maybe yesterday was just one of those days. Thanks again......Nut

One thing I wanted to run by y'all. I noticed that when I use the Cibola, it behaves much better when I swing it a little higher off the ground. I found that "odd" I'm not a ground scrubber, but the Silver does better skimming closer to the ground(the way I've always done).

I found that "odd" I'm not a ground scrubber, but the Silver does better skimming closer to the ground(the way I've always done).... First, read the operator's manual and note that they will suggest the search coils be worked about 1"-2" off the ground. This can actually improve performance in many ground environment and/or cause less "noise" .

Second, keep in mind that these two models rely on a factory calibrated Ground Balance setting and, if either is 'off' from what would be ideal for your area, you can have some falsing or noisy operation.

Finally, a third consideration is the control set-up. If they are each set to the same discriminate rejection point (actual target rejection and NOT based on control labels/markings), and if each is operated at the maximum allowable Sensitivity w/o chatter, I think you'll find that there is a little more observable difference in performance. Nturally, using the same size and type of coil would make it a fair comparison.

Happy Hunting!

Thanks, Monte. I'll experiment a little with the settings. For where I'm hunting, the Silver is hard to beat, though. I'm selling my Minelab Explorer and using only Tesoros.
