Silver uMax or Compadre

synthnut

Well-known member
I'm looking to get a Silver uMax or a Compadre for my brother .....He basically travels the roads in search of loose coins ( he does very well !! ) and I know tht once I start getting some nice Silver, he will want to join in ..... For those of you who have had both machines , or are familiar with both machines , what advantages would he have with the Silver over the Compadre.....Will he be able to go deepers with the Silver with the additinal Sensitivity knob ? .... Is the 8 inch coil on the Silver better than the smaller coil on the Compadre ? ....Give me your thoughts guys .....Thanks for your time ....Jim

Synthnut, I don't own a Compadre yet, but I do have a Silver

I agree with Joe dirt 1. I use the 4" coil on my Silver and find coins where tot lots already searched. Never been skunked. Worth the price difference. Then switch to 12x10 coil for open fields.

i have owned both and liked the compadre so much that i had to get that one back when i got my new compadre i took off the face and adjusted the internal controls and ground balanced it to my tast and cranked the volume trimmer and i have no problem getting coins in the 4" 5" range but if you encounter really bad ground like black sand you will only get coins at 2" deep but in avreag ground it does well and pinponts like a dreem and its light its not going to cover lots of ground fast but in trashy eareas its the thing the silver umax would be preferible it has a nice all metal switchand has some good options for coils in my ground i could not get coins at 6" deep so to me its depth is medium but my frend found a button at 8" i kinda like the 12 khz of the compadre now if you hunt for rings in disq past foil dont expect to find small gold rings larger rings may still come thru hope this helps Gunnar MN

I'd opt for the Silver - as mentioned you can adjust the sens. and change coils.

Thanks guys ...Points well taken ....I didn't know that the coils couldn't be chaged on the Compadre ....That speaks volumes right there ..... I have a Minelab Safari coming to me for my first machine , and would like a backup machine .....I will get the Silver for my brother as I think it will suit his needs just fine, and even beyond .....If I like the simplicity of the Tesoro trying out his machine , I will then get a Vaquero for my backup machine ....I will REALLY need the ground balance that it offers and I have heard nothing but GREAT reviews on it .....Thanks a lot to all of you for your help ....Jim
