Silver Umax opinions

I am trying to narrow the field for my first detector (other than the Smart Tracker XR808 my dad gave me w/ no manual) and I am starting to think Silver umax for price and capability reasons. Advice/actual experience welcomed.

I tell ya', I have the Silver and love it, as well as the Compadre. But I've been watching all the videos and reading all the posts and believe I would bite the bullet and get the Vaquero if I had it all to do again and just get it over with for good.

I used the Silver for a couple of years and it is a great little detector. I really like how it has a different sound over different targets....coins have that mellow round sound to them and trash has a harsh broken signal. The first hunt with my new Silver at a football field I had hunted alot got me a 10k class ring
on the first target I dug there. I hunt with a Vaquero now, but still regret trading my Silver

Thanks all for your comments. I am certain that the Silver Umax will be my choice as an excellent learning detector and one that I will use for years to come no matter what else I buy. I can't say where I will hunt or what targets will interest me the most but I am sold on the Tesoro line regardless of what others say. I go more for quality/simplicity anytime over glitz and gadgetry. Thanks again!!

I can't add much to what has already been said.

Most folks seem to keep their Silver as a backup when they eventually go to the Vaquero.

Great choice, My brother and I love our silver. Only after 4 years am I going to get a new detector, and it's only because we need a second so we can go hunt together.

I talked to a tech at Tesoro, once, and I believe Monty has stated the same.

Changing coils on a manual GB unit is no problem at all.
A preset GB unit, however, might work ok with a different coil, but to get optimum results and the best depth and discrimination, they both highly recommend sending the box and coil in so they can be "tuned.

Got this off another site....simple but to the point!

The Silver is a great detector.

Run your sensitivity as high as you can and still keep the machine stable. You'll get better depth.

On your discrimination settings: know that anything above foil will start costing you gold jewelry. But it will force you to dig a lot of trash also. There is no way to avoid that. Trash = rings (gold).

If I was in a mood to only coin shoot, I sometimes turned mine up past "pull tab" and dug mostly dimes, copper pennies, quarters, and bigger silver. Dug very little trash. I missed some things to be sure, but if I'm only in the mood to cherry pick, that

I've found a lot of coins with my silver. It can be outfitted with different coils to suit your needs. When I upgraded, I kept mine and am glad I did. I appreciate the Tesoro's simple yet very effective operation. I've got an Eldorado to complement my silver and would like to try a Compadre at some point.

I have both the Vaquero and Silver uMax. Both have their place. I run a 4 inch concentric coil on the Silver when hunting trashy grounds for coins and in tot lots it allows me to work close to the appratus that would set a larger coil off.

The first Tesoro I ever owned was a Silver. I was a dealer for a while for Tesoro, too. That being said, I've used many Tesoros since the first one. The other machines are gone, but the Silver remains. Best model out there for land.

Wow! That's quite a recommendation!

I have the SUmax and just love it, it hits the coins hard and has been real reliable for me. It so light I can swing it for hours and hours. Great little machine.

What kind of depth does the silver umax get?
6". But in a/m mode about 2" more. I had a CZ-5 pick up a ring (costume) at about 8" and the Silver umax had a faint sound on it in a/m mode. Now that's a full 6" and that's deeper than most realize. That's in East Texas mineralized ground and could be deeper or less, depending on the ground.

Thanks for responding. I was curious about that. You see all kinds of air depth test on a lot of different models on utube but I found none on the silver umax.

Wish it had a meter, or, something. Trying to love my Silver uMax. Haven't really given it a chance by being in a good area. Haven't really been out this year, but keep thinking that my '80's Bounty Hunter Red Baron 78 had a meter, why doesn't the uMax? Guess it is my fault. I read here and see videos of all the great finds that you guys get with your Silver Umax, that I want to believe that it will work for me, as well. Got to get past the doubts. Your posts help.

After so many posted to my thread about what they have found with their Silver uMax, I am definitely give it a serious go, for me to learn the curve, as best that I can, and to look for the right spots to hunt.
