Silver uMax... does it really...

Find gold?

Still kind of a noobie... but have been "hunting" - alot - since about Jan/Feb of this year.

Ok, love the Silver uMax, but man, even though I have found about 9 rings, and a bunch of real silver (stamped stuff, 925, etc)... the gold continues to elude me. In the past month or two, where I began hunting with Disc set to right below iron, Is when I finally started to hit rings... coincidence? maybe... because I don't think any of the rings I have hit are real gold (can't see a stamp inside, or when I do a scratch test, I see anything from a coppery color to dark metal, to a silver, underneath)... so, after a few months of a lot of hunting, parks, schools, etc... "still" no verifiable gold? I mean, seriously????

What the heck am I doing wrong? Or is the gold truely that elusive? I dunno, I would have thought for sure I would have hit at least "1" gold ring by now? Again, seem to have no probs hitting silver... but where the McNuggets are the gold rings??? What am I doing worng? Or is it that the Silver uMax does not like Gold? Can't be. Gotta be me, doing something wrong. what do ya'll think? Don't get me wrong, the silver causes me to do the "Happy Dance", Lol, heck, so does a penny, but with Gold, I think I'd do a cartwheel (hey - not easy for a 255 plus pounder, ha ha).

Thanks folks, am thinking I am losing my marbles here with the gold jewelry hunting. Maybe no one is losing it anymore. And one more thing, the places I go appear to be places no one has hunted, or at least not much, as I find tons of coions and a decent amount of silver jewelry... just no gold.

Thanks again.

It took two of us 6mo of regular hunting to hit that first REAL (not plated) yellow happy-dance ring. Gold varies wildly in its composition, especially white gold, and just does not pick up easily. I only get 1/2" on the tip of the ProPointer with my engagement ring (white & yellow gold (not rhodium plated either on the white gold). I get an inch on the yellow gold wedding band. I get 2" on a penny... See? As I heard on a podcast today, if finding gold was easy, everybody'd be doing it!

You should get a clue every time it comes over a nickel or pulltab. The signals are stronger than deeper clad signals. I've found about 5 with mine and some were tiny 10k rings, but the teeny ones don't give as big a signal as the others in the foil-tab area. It LOVES gold rings.

Interesting... so what were you running as when you hit the gold? Was it in AM or disc set to Iron etc? I have been running right below iron... should I change my tactics to All Metal instead and dig everything? I usually don't go after anything that does not sound rounded and solid... maybe I should? I also do not usually go after anything deeper than 6 inches, as I am in parks alot or school fields. So, have been running disc at Iron and only going after the solid sounds (left/right/up/down)... should I change my tactics and my settings? Thanks folks. Am getting some confidence back. Lol.

Minimum discrimination.. In tot lots where the diggin's easy, I'll sometimes go to a/m and find some tiny earrings. Here's the entire story- For rings minimum discrimination pretty much covers the entire gamut of gold. Quit trying to figure out a sure way to identify them-some of them are so irregular in shape, some are bent, some are really thin, some may even be next to iron or some other defeating characteristic. And because of this many give up and go to higher discrimination to just find the larger rings-they're the ones that give the "round" signal and all the other characteristics you seek. If you go this route, just try to set it to where the larger pieces of foil break up noticeably.

You are going to have to dig the pulltabs and nickel signals to find the gold, assuming you do have it under your coil. Onus

Dang! Found another gold-plated ring yesterday. Thought I was gonna have a pic for you. You have me wondering, now. I've found about 20 rings in the past few months with the Silver, and not one of them is real gold. :surrender:

You are getting closer though.... Lol.

Ok, I went out again last night as well... 2 more rings (total now of 11 for me in the past several weeks)... one a silver wedding band... stamped inside was "Sterling" and the other must be junk, all black... can't seem to get it clean. Figures. Still, no gold. )-:

Ya it will find gold very well , BUT NONT SET YOUR DISQ PAST FOIL when people lose a 1,500 dallar ring they go rent a detector and find it when they lose a silver it just dont pay to look for it but you r chances may improve on the beach

Hmmm, ok, this may be a

I could cover a wall with the the caps and tabs Ive dug. Desc was always set at below foil and thumb the knob to past tab to check. W/4" coil I couldnt desc. out any good metals with rings and any coin(dang zinc pennies too) making a unmistakable clear tone. I hunt 90% with small coils and try to find areas where people exercise or something where they set bags on benches or on grd. Take rings off throw ring in bag but they miss and in the grass it goes. In a weak moment I traded my Silver but stayed in the family with a Tejon. I coin hunt as a religion and I am the pastor of the Devine Order of Southern Baptist Coin&MD Collectors and I really needed dual descrimination when on the grass pulpit! :super: No church collection plate as were all broke from buying stuff. Havent gotten a small coil for it yet but the stock coil has done the job so far. Hunting new grd in mourning with it.

I haven't found a gold ring on land since 2006, don't feel bad. And I hunt with as little discrimination as possible
and at times hunt in all metal. I dig plenty of junk. Guess it all depends where you live. Lot of people's fingers swell
up in certain weather, for sure they are not going to loose a ring. Eventually you'll find gold, there's enough other cool
stuff out there to find in the meantime. Don't the testimonials in detector catalogs make your mouth water, those piles of gold??
I usually only find it when water hunting. Got lucky last week near the waters edge found a
14kt gold eagle pendent with my Silver. And near the beach playground found a 10kt gold bracelet.

Here's something funny,
First time out with my Silver Sabre Umax back in 2006? Found a 14kt gold butterfly ring.
First time out with my Silver Umax last week finds the eagle.
Now I just need a Silver Sabre Plus to find another pc. of gold....LOL

OMG ya all make it sound like its a obesission, just go out there and be happy in detecting, your finding more stuff than a lot of people have.

Obsessed? Who? Where? Addicted maybe. And yup, been fun finding the things so far.. having a blast. But would really like to hit the real gold every now and then. Its personal now. Lol.

Actually, I'm also the type that likes to learn as much as I can about the things that interest me... md'ing fits the bill. Happy Huntin'.

Do some air testing in Disc mode with a variety of gold rings. You should get the same results in the dirt if your soil is mild.

Quick update! Finally!!!! Got me first 14K White Gold Ring!!! This morning, hunting in AM, got nice hit, switched to Disc/Min... still there. Dug it! Out pops this nice heavy White Gold ring! Ok, reckon I can now (finally!) also say, yup, the Silver Finds Gold. Ha ha.

Just wanted to asy thanks to ya'll, you were right. Nice way to start the morning. Its funny though, pulled that sucker out of the ground, found it in the first 10 minutes of the hunt, in the middle of nowhere of this huge park. Then did not feel like hunting anymore, ha ha. Thanks again for all the advice etc.

Hey, to post a photo of it... do I just use the Upload File? Or is there a better way to include it in the text etc?

Thanks again!!!

During the summer i hunt with a Minelab Excal 2 in the water.
In the winter i hunt tot lots and play grounds. I found a Gold chain & 2 gold rings in Feb-April. 1 was a ladies wedding band with 3 diamonds.
I dig everything that's solid and round shaped in sound unless i am hunting a area where people play contact or running sports then i dig everything. I use no discriminate.
As far as depth i have found rings at 7" with my silver umax I no longer dig small plugs to time consuming i took a regular shovel and cut about 2" off each side.
It makes i nice walking stick-shovel-weapon. when i hunt bad areas of town. I also find it much quicker to dig a big plug seams to go back nicer anyways.

HH

Congrats on the gold!

I just use the upload feature to put pictures in. There is a max file size 420 KB. If your picture is bigger, edit or re-size it prior to uploading.

Thanks folks... here is the photo... sorry for the lousy quality... cellphone, in the park, ha ha.

Wow, Crenman, sounds like you are doing pretty well, thats fantastic!!
